Steve jobs

The man who infamously fired Jobs, John Sculley, told The Daily Beast's Thomas E. Weber about his regrets, their rift—and how their partnership could have worked.

In the annals of blown calls, it ranks somewhere between the publishers who turned down the first Harry Potter book and baseball umpire Jim Joyce’s instantly infamous perfect-game flub last week. It was the spring of 1985, and the board of Apple Computer decided it no longer needed the services of one Steven P. Jobs.

Where are the men who sent Steve Jobs packing today?

zeenews.india.com / Updated on Saturday, August 20, 2011, 10:17.

Bangalore: India's iconic figure N.R. Narayana Murthy was wished by Microsoft founder Bill Gates late Friday as he retired from Infosys Ltd that he co-founded three decades ago with just Rs 10,000.

Billionaire Gates called up Murthy from Seattle in the US where his global software major is headquartered and tele-wished him the very best in his future endeavours.

Though Murthy's term ends formally Aug 21 as non-executive chairman and chief mentor of the country's second largest IT bellwether, he decided to bid adieu to his 'grown up baby' Friday as his 65th birthday falls Saturday, a weekend holiday for the company.

Incidentally, his illustrious wife Sudha Murthy celebrated her 62nd birthday Friday. Their son Rohan, daughter-in-law Lakshmi and daughter Akshata were present on the historic occasion to witness the passage of a glorious era in a company Murthy toiled to build brick-by-brick with six other co-founders.
Renowned banker K.V. Kamath will succeed Murthy Aug 22 as the first non-founder chairman of the USD 6.1-billion global software major following his appointment April 30 to the top executive post.

Murthy will, however, continue to associate with the 30-year-old company as chairman emeritus for life long and be a friend, guide and philosopher to about 130,000 Infocions the world over.

"It has been a wonderful and dream journey. I take this opportunity to express deep gratitude to each and everyone who has been associated with this great company in the past and present for helping me in realising the dream," an emotional Murthy told a packed auditorium in the sprawling Infy campus on the outskirts of this tech hub.

Other co-founders, including newly-appointed co-chairman S. Gopalakrishnan, chief executive S.D. Shibulal, N.S. Raghavan and K. Dinesh joined about 10,000 employees in giving a standing ovation to Murthy, flanked by his family members, relatives and long-time friends.
The absence of another co-founder and former vice-chairman Nandan Nilekani, currently chairman of the state-run Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) or Aadhar was conspicuous as he was away in New Delhi and could not attend the three-hour long event due to pressing engagements.

In a narrative beginning in 2016 and ending today, Forbes India recalls how the once irrepressible Google lost the mobile OS war.

Black Forest

August 12, 2016: In spite of glowing reviews, it may be too late for 'Black Forest', version 9.0 of Google's Android operating system (OS), to turn Google's ship around. In the last 12 months, Android's market share among smart devices has fallen from 35.4 per cent to a shade below 20 per cent globally. It is now just a few percentage points ahead of BlackBerry's BBX OS, while Microsoft Windows Phone and Apple iOS are both significantly ahead.

But as Andy Rubin, the man in charge of Android at Google, got off the phone in his office at Mountain View, California, even those per centage points seemed ephemeral. He had been talking to the head of Samsung's mobile devices division in Suwon, South Korea. "I hate to say this to you, Andy, but it is now becoming untenable for us to support both Android and Windows at the same time," he had said.
In less than two months, Samsung would announce that all of its smart devices would run exclusively on Windows. Though Android's relative share vis-a-vis Microsoft Windows had been falling steadily since 2012, it still accounted for nearly 30 per cent of all Samsung smart devices.

Win-kia

September 21, 2015: Research firm Gartner today announced that Microsoft Windows Phone had become the largest smart device OS globally. "Aided in large part by Nokia's volumes in Asia and Africa, and by increasing adoption by device makers, Windows has surpassed our own expectations," said the firm in a report.

The Microsoft-Nokia alliance, dubbed 'Win-kia', has surprised most analysts since its launch in late 2011. Though nowhere comparable in power to the Microsoft-Intel ('Win-tel') collaboration, Win-kia has been credited with upending the mobile OS playing field in just a few years.

While Nokia's wide range of phones and deep distribution and retail experience in emerging markets allowed Windows Phone to capture a large part of the entry and mid-level smartphone market, Microsoft's carrot-and-stick approach had done the trick with other device makers.

Each Android-run smart device meant royalties of $7-9 to Microsoft, insisted its suited, hard-nosed lawyer army. The only way to bring that down, they would say, is if the manufacturers committed to using Windows on a certain percentage of devices. The more the commitment, the less the royalty.

Already burdened under royalty payments ranging from $11-15 per device to Apple, Oracle and a bunch of other big and small companies, most manufacturers quietly acceded.

The Tipping Point

June 13, 2014: The Independent Mobile App Developers Association (I-MADA) is miffed at Google. "Google has quite clearly failed to step up and shield small developers from frivolous lawsuits, as a result of which much of our money and efforts is being spent on court cases instead of developing better apps," said the body in a press release today. According to the statistics attached, Android developers attracted nearly 60 per cent of all patent infringement lawsuits.

Microsoft hopes to make the rapidly growing flood of information online more user-friendly and accessible with its new personalized search engine, Emporia.
A five-person team of Microsoft scientists has been working in Cambridge on an intelligent search engine able to learn and provide search results based on individual needs. Ralf Herbrich, a Microsoft manager, recently updated attendees at the Next11 conference in Berlin, even bringing along a prototype.
To tell whether an item is relevant for a user, the Emporia project also analyses data from posts on social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook. Knowledge and concrete experience from these networks is growing ever more important, says Herbrich.
    Worth watching it!
