Seventeen is a difficult age. You are just finishing school and you have to decide what you want to be in life.
You take a look at those around you plunging into the professional world with no second thoughts. It is like they were destined to be engineers or doctors;
there is just no looking back. You jump in with them. You become an engineer. Only to realise you never wanted to be one.
“I didn’t have a better idea of what I wanted to do back then,” says Ashik Kalam, an engineer-turned-journalist.
“At 17 when you join engineering you don’t even know what you really want in life. After four years, you figure it out and most sensible people leave the path they chose wrongly. In my case, opportunities presented themselves and writing happened to be one of my interests so I chose this profession.”
Renu R. Nair, a Kochi-based content writer, listened to her dad when he advised her to do engineering.
“I wanted to go in for literature, but I thought he was right. But when I was doing engineering, I realised it is not my thing. So I followed my dream and started writing,” she says.
The same thing happened with Aneesh Ramachandran from Thiruvananthapuram. “It was either medicine or engineering, and I ended up being an engineer. Took the first software job I got through. The industry was good; it gave me financial stability and new challenges. But, after a point I realised there was no personal satisfaction; that something was missing. I thought life was small and there were a lot of things that I wanted to do. So I decided to take the plunge into social service — something I always wanted to do,” says the software engineer, who left Infosys to take up a job at Teach For India, a movement in which professionals and graduates teach at under-resourced schools.
Casey Fernandez, however, has a different story to tell. Passionate about Biology, Casey took up Bioinformatics in college and got a paper published in a national and international journal.
He took a different route then by attending carpentry classes under an ashari, skipping all the campus placements.
He then got a job at Johnson & Johnson in Delhi as a territory manager. One year later, he left the job to come home and start a new venture called The Readers’ Web — to promote reading among youngsters. “When I’m 50, I proudly want to say that I have done it all,” he concludes.

U.S. RECESSION: Bank of America Plans Big Layoffs to Cut Costs!

For LEED Consultancy / IGBC Certifications, Green Building Design, Green Homes, Green Factory Buildings, Green SEZs, Green Townships & Energy Audits - www.greentekindika.com

By NELSON D. SCHWARTZ, / nytimes.com / Published: August 19, 2011.

Bank of America is set to eliminate at least 3,500 jobs in the coming months, as the beleaguered financial giant seeks to cut costs and restructure amid deepening shareholder dissatisfaction.

With its stock down more than 50 percent since January, the job cuts by Bank of America may be only the start of a broader restructuring at the company, which is the nation’s largest bank. Brian T. Moynihan, the chief executive of the bank, has said that he hopes to trim quarterly expenses by $1.5 billion. Thousands more job cuts are likely in the months ahead.

“I know it is tough to have to manage through reductions,” Mr. Moynihan wrote in a memo to the company’s senior leadership late Thursday that outlined the cuts. “But we owe it to our customers and our shareholders to remain competitive, efficient and manage our expenses carefully.”

In the memo, obtained by The New York Times, Mr. Moynihan said the company’s broader revamping effort was nearing completion of its first phase, which examines the consumer business and support functions. A third and final review is set for early September.

The company plans to announce the first results of that project next month, which could include further job cuts that would total more than 10,000.

Mr. Moynihan said in the memo that the company had already begun to tell the 3,500 employees that their jobs were to be eliminated, and that the reductions would come throughout the company. Bank of America, which has roughly 280,000 employees, cut about 2,500 jobs in the first half of the year.

Even more than its large rivals, Bank of America has been battered particularly hard by the bursting of the housing bubble and the surge in foreclosures. It has already suffered tens of billions in losses tied to its disastrous acquisition in 2008 of Countrywide Financial, the subprime lender that has come to epitomize the excesses of the housing boom of the last decade.

BAD NEWS FROM EUROPE: HSBC to Cut 30,000 Jobs by 2013 as Costs Rise!

For LEED Consultancy, Green Building Design, Green Homes, Green Factory Buildings, Green SEZs, Green Townships,

By Howard Mustoe and Gavin Finch, http://www.bloomberg.com / Aug 1, 2011 7:05 PM GMT+0530.

HSBC Holdings Plc (HSBA), Europe’s largest bank, plans to cut 30,000 jobs by the end of 2013, about 10 percent of the total, to stem costs driven higher by rising salaries. The shares jumped.
The bank’s costs in relation to revenue rose to 57.5 percent in the first half from 50.9 percent a year earlier, because of higher staff numbers, wage inflation and other costs, HSBC said as it reported a 36 percent increase in first-half profit. Costs are still higher than its 48 to 52 percent target range, the London-based lender said in a statement today.
“The market is likely to interpret the job cuts in a positive way,” said Neil Smith, a banking analyst at WestLB AG in London. “HSBC need to keep their costs under control.”
HSBC is cutting jobs and closing offices to reduce costs by as much as $3.5 billion over the next two years as it tackles wage inflation in faster-growing economies and prepares for stricter capital rules. The bank follows Credit Suisse Group AG, UBS AG, Bank of America Corp. and Goldman Sachs Group Inc. in eliminating roles as investment banking revenue declines. European banks have cut 230,000 jobs since the start of the financial crisis in 2007, according to Bloomberg Industries.
HSBC gained as much as 5.1 percent to 624.9 pence and traded up 4 percent to 618.4 pence at 1.53 p.m. in London, the biggest riser in the Bloomberg Europe 500 banks index, giving it a market value of about 110 billion pounds ($180 billion).
