In this Sunday’s issue of PARADE, Sarah Jessica Parker, who stars in I Don’t Know How She Does It, in theaters Sept. 16, opens up to Meryl Gordon about marriage, kids, and…Sex and the City 3! “I didn’t plot a future like this, although I know some people do,” she says.

Parker, 46, gets real about what her life is really like, discussing everything from her marriage to actor Matthew Broderick to life with her son, James Wilkie, 8, and her 2-year-old twin girls, Tabitha and Loretta.

Her 8-year-old son, James Wilkie, wants to be an actor, and he’s eager to start auditioning.

“I don’t want him to do it until after he goes to college: But part of me thinks maybe it’s better if he knows the truth now about how hard it is to be a working actor. I don’t know that he grasps what it took to get us here.”

Parker acknowledges that her childhood left her with money anxieties and that she’s eager to capitalize on her earning power.

“I have a lot of responsibilities outside myself. I have a large family. I want to know I can always be helpful. I guess I worry.”

On tying with Angelina Jolie for the top spot on Forbes’ list of highest-earning actresses.

“Where do they get these numbers? I didn’t plot a future like this, although I know some people do. When Matthew and I started working, all we knew is that we wanted to be great actors. I don’t think I ever thought about money or that people would know my name. I loooove the work! When I was a little girl getting free lunches in Cincinnati, could I imagine being on a list in Forbes magazine?”

On the difficulty of balancing career and motherhood.

In ‘The Whistleblower’ which opens this weekend, Rachel Weisz portrays a U.N. peacekeeper who exposes sex trafficking involving peacekeepers in Bosnia. Jessica Bennett talks with Kathryn Bolkovac, the woman who inspired the film.

They were peacekeepers: sent to Bosnia in the aftermath of the Balkans war, tasked with overseeing the local police force and restoring calm. In blue United Nations uniforms, they arrived from countries all over the world, roaming the hills near Sarajevo and Ilidza, trying to maintain order in a nation battered by civil conflict.

But as we learn in the first minutes of The Whistleblower, which opens in select theaters this weekend and stars Oscar winner Rachel Weisz, many of these men and women were ill-trained and unsupervised.

They landed in a foreign land with no clear mandate, and at times, little understanding of what they were there to accomplish. "No one knew what authority they had," says Kathryn Bolkovac, the Nebraska-cop-turned-U.N.-peacekeeper who inspired the film. "It was ridiculous."

Ultimately, when Bolkovac discovers that the men with "IPTF"—short for INTERNATIONAL POLICE TASK FORCE—stitched across their shoulders are involved in the brutal trafficking of underage girls, the response by a high agency commander in the film is: “Those girls are whores of war. It happens.”

With her film Crazy, Stupid, Love hitting theaters Friday, former America’s Next Top Model hopeful Analeigh Tipton talks to Marlow Stern about being “sold” to a Saudi prince and going Hollywood.

You are a star actress… we think that’s probably the direction you should go.

With those words, host Tyra Banks bid farewell to a teary-eyed Analeigh Tipton on the reality competition America’s Next Top Model, eliminating her in third place. Tipton's brush with fame should have ended there, with her vanishing into the abyss of the L.A. club scene or hooking up with an Entourage cast member like so many contestants before her. But after Tipton landed starring roles in HBO's Hung, Venice Film Festival closer Damsels in Distress, and the highly anticipated ensemble dramedy, Crazy, Stupid, Love, the latter earning her the distinction of being one of The New York Times's "Faces to Watch," Tyra is looking mighty prescient.

Tipton, now 22, was born in Minnesota and began skating when she was just 2 1/2 years old. "You learn to skate then you learn to walk," she says. At age 8, she moved to Sacramento, California, where she was home-schooled and, for a time, lived with her skating coach to avoid the travel time to the rink. After being crowned two-time regional champion in the pairs division and competing twice at the U.S. Junior Figure Skating Championships, Tipton retired from the ice. "I was really good at being pretty on the ice, but when it came to jumping, I think I landed more on my bottom than I did anywhere else," Tipton says. "We even went to a doctor to see how tall I would get. They said I was going to be 5-4, and when I was 16, I woke up and I was nearly 5-10."

At 17, she moved to Los Angeles to write and direct films. Soon after, a woman at the gym approached Tipton and said she wanted to sign her to a modeling agency. Tipton then went out to a dinner to meet some men, presumably in the fashion world, only to discover that she was the dinner date of a Saudi prince. "I didn’t know anybody and these nice people offered friendship," Tipton says. "They ended up being bad people that wanted to exploit young, trusting girls." Not long after, she began receiving phone calls that said, "You have to come to Saudi Arabia. He wants to make you his wife." It turns out she had been "sold" to the aforementioned Saudi prince for an undisclosed sum. "That was my moment of, 'OK, I have to grow a spine,'" says Tipton, who removed herself from the situation before the deal was sealed.

While browsing the mall one day, 19-year-old Tipton met some actual modeling recruiters, and was then contacted through MySpace to become a contestant on cycle 11 of America's Next Top Model. Throughout the show's 2008 season, Tipton was very genial—no thrown drinks or back-stabbing, just a plethora of pick-me-ups—and adorably clumsy. After she was eliminated, she signed with Ford Models and appeared in a multipage spread in Maxim as well as catalog work for Guess and Forever 21.

Bachchan lambasts media over blasts coverage - Agencies.

Bollywood veteran Amitabh Bachchan has taken a dig over the way media covers tragedies like the latest Mumbai serial blasts.

"Yet again our city of Mumbai has been made the target of a brutal attack. Once again there shall be concerned voices raised by those in authority. Once again Mumbai will show its resilience and get back to work as rapidly as possible.

"Once again TV channels shall give exclusive reports from the site of the action, claiming, how they were the first to bring this tragedy to your doorstep," Bachchan blogged.

I don't think he was blasting anybody; he just was trying to tell us the way we and we will be, while the unabated bombings, killing scores of innocent civilians, each time, with no permanent solution!

How did it feel to be the recipient of the first DSC award?


This award is an exciting development for South Asian writers. The short list was announced at the Shakespeare Globe Theatre and had eminent judges. It is a well-conceived prize so it makes me happy.

Why did you choose the title Homeboy?


It's a kind of a colloquial expression for the term yaar. It’s something Chuck hasn’t really heard of. But the real reason appears in the latter half of the novel.

Most books that have touched upon this subject are filled with angst. You have managed to portray the post 9/11 saga in a witty manner. Was that deliberate?


The first half of the book is very different from the latter half. It’s a tragic-comedy and the tone does change gradually. Books like Joseph Heller’s Catch 22 and Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughter House Five that focus on World War 1 have more resonance than Ernest Hemingway’s The Son Also Rises. I like to create characters that remain with the reader and are animated.
