Srinagar:  Kashmir's worst kept secret is now out in the open. What many have suspected about several mysterious disappearances in Kashmir may be true, a new human rights report says nearly 2700 alleged militant graves are not what was claimed. It has given fresh hope to families hunting for their loved ones.
The investigation team of the J&K state Human Rights Commission, after a three-year probe, has found out 2700 unmarked graves.
It brings new hope for those like 26-year-old Bilquees fighting for justice for her missing father Manzoor Ahmad Dar. Mr Dar disappeared in 2002 after he was picked up by the Army from his home. While an Army Major has now been indicted for this, there's no closure for his grieving family.
"We appeal to the government to just tell us what has happen to my father? Where is my father? If his grave is anywhere, for God sake tell us where is his grave," says a grieving Bilquees.
During the investigation, more than 500 bodies in unmarked graves were identified - they were found to be local militants and civilians.

Unmarked graves are common in north Kashmir since the start of militancy in 1990, and many say this is just the tip of the iceberg.

NAIROBI, Kenya — A U.S. group says new satellite imagery and eyewitness reports point to evidence of three new mass graves in a contested area of Sudan.

The Satellite Sentinel Project on Wednesday released images of what it says are two piles of corpses wrapped in body bags or tarps in Kadugli, the capital of South Kordofan, where Sudan’s Arab military has been fighting black tribesmen loyal to the new state of South Sudan.

The group said an analysis of satellite images concluded that pro-government forces are trying to cover up a third mass grave beneath a water tank.

Some of the 222 human remains, believed to be those of Kurds found in a mass grave, are marked with red flags, some 70km from Diwaniyah, south of Baghdad - AFP.

The remains of 222 people, probably Kurds killed under Iraq's former regime in 1987, were extracted from a mass grave south of Baghdad, the authorities said on Sunday.
"We have found 222 bodies and we have transferred them to the morgue in the province of Najaf," said Karim Ziad, the official in charge of mass graves at the Department of Human Rights.
Iraqi authorities announced on Wednesday they had discovered another mass grave with 900 corpses in the Shanafiyah region near the city of Diwaniyah.
Ziad said several factors suggested that the victims, most with bullet wounds, were Kurds killed during the regime of ousted dictator Saddam Hussein.
"The mass graves are made up of six trenches, and we have done (work) on only three of them," he said, suggesting the number of victims could be much higher.
Dakhil Saihoud, provincial head of the Justice and Accountability Commission which investigates issues relating to the former regime, said he was informed there were 17 trenches at the site.
"It is possible there are hundreds of bodies in there," he said.
