Left parties on Thursday equated Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s remarks that “many forces” would not like to see India realise its potential with that of Indira Gandhi raising the bogey of foreign hand to justify imposition of Emergency and sought a clarification from him.
While CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury said it was “disturbingly familiar” to Indira Gandhi’s arguments, CPI’s D. Raja said the Prime Minister should clarify which “forces” he was talking about in his statement in Parliament yesterday.
In his statement on the police action against Anna Hazare and his supporters, Dr. Singh had said, “We are now emerging as one of the important players on the world stage. There are many forces that would not like to see India realise its true place in the comity of nations. We must not play into their hands. We must not create an environment in which our economic progress is hijacked by internal dissention.”

BOOKS ON INDIA, AN ANALYSIS: It needs more than love to write about India!

For LEED Consultancy / IGBC Certifications, Green Building Design, Green Homes, Green Factory Buildings, Green SEZs, Green Townships & Energy Audits - www.greentekindika.com

IANS / ibnlive.in.com / Posted on Aug 18, 2011 at 03:28pm IST.

New Delhi: Stepping into the soul of India is not easy for a foreign writer; the journey needs more than mere love for the country. The process requires an identification with history, facts at fingertips and an uncanny nose for immediate socio-political contexts, show landmark books written over the years.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

"What is missing in French's book is evidence of a struggle to understand India and one's own place in it. French never gets much beyond the glib assertion in his preface that the new, cool India is the 'world's default setting for the future'," Adiga said.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

William Dalrymple, the author of bestsellers such as "City of Djinns" and "The Last Mughal", is an example of what a foreigner can bring on the table at a time when Indians are also writing non-fiction about their country, Mahajan said. "He has an unabashed eye for exotic details."

--------------------------------------------------------------------

For Geoff Dyer, the author of "Jeff in Venice, Death in Varanasi", the spiritual nirvana of Varanasi was the anchor of semi-autobiographical Jeff Atman (the protagonist of his book) who comes to the pilgrim town in quest for renunciation.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

US-based Wendy Doniger, the author of "The Hindus: An Alternative History", has been tapping into the wealth of Indian myths and dynamics of the Hindu faith for decades now to cater to a new segment of western and Indian audiences who are still curious about eastern mysticism in a spillover of the flower revolution of the 1960s-70s.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

"India has always been an object of fascination for foreign writers because of its exoticism. Even the earliest of travellers and chroniclers like Ibn Batuta wrote about India extensively but with the specific purpose of cultural understanding," Dipa Chaudhuri, chief editor of Om Books, told IANS.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

The British Raj has been a strategic inspiration for authors such as MM Kaye and EM Forster, whose sustained affairs with India resulted in an amazing collection of unparalleled Anglophone literature.

ANTI-CORRUPTION MOVEMENT: "Foreign hand" in Anna movement: baffling Congress allegation!

ndtv.com / Press Trust of India, Updated: August 17, 2011 19:36 IST.

New Delhi:  Suspecting "foreign" hand behind Anna Hazare's anti-graft movement, Congress today raised questions on the US' statement that India would exercise "appropriate democratic restraint" in dealing with peaceful protest and asked the government to inquire how a "lone" civil rights activist is drawing support.

"US never supported any movement in India since its independence. For the first time, the US said that Anna Hazare's movement should be allowed and there should be no obstruction to it. What was the need for the US to give this statement?

"It needs to be considered whether there is any power which is supporting this movement which wants to destabilize not only the government but the country. We need to take the statement of the US seriously,"

01) The day Congress rids itself of its 'Shooting-in-the-Mouth' spokespersons that it has now, it will stop committing blunder after blunder as it has been doing, lately!

02) It is an insult to the intelligence of the common people of all ages, stations-in-life and of diverse backgrounds, converging on each city centre, from across India, supporting 'Anna Hazare' - a simpleton, ex-army Jawan, from a remote village - who has been raising his voice against the corruption, that they are instigated by a foreign power or a local one!

03) Congress leadership is definitely, not listening to the voice of the people of India and foolishly believe that those who shout on the streets aren't those who voted them to power in 2009 and who would vote in 2014!!!

Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad on Tuesday said the government should disclose names of all Indians who have stashed black money in foreign banks and demanded that the money be brought back to the country and “redistributed” among the poor.

“The black money stashed abroad is that belonging to the poor and the same needs to be distributed among the poor,” he told reporters here.

When asked as to how it should be distributed, Mr. Lalu said: “Let the money first come, then a policy on how to go about its distribution can be made“.

He said the Central Government should disclose the names of Indians who have stashed black money in foreign banks.

Mr. Prasad’s statement comes a day after the Supreme Court constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the black money issue.

Yes, people whose stash is hidden within India need not worry about the sleaze money parked abroad!
