Investing as little as 0.16 per cent of the world’s gross domestic product or $198 billion per year could give half a billion people regular access to safe drinking water within four years, a U.N. official said on Friday.

That would halve the number of people who risk serious illness and death on a daily basis, the United Nations Environment Programme said.

The findings are presented in the U.N.’s Green Economy report, which also warns that if the global community continues to ignore water services investments, demand for water risks outstripping supply by 40 per cent before 2030.

UNEP spokesman Nick Nuttall said the world total of people without access to safe drinking water currently totals around 1 billion people.

According to the report, people living in countries such as Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam are particularly prone to catching waterborne diseases because of the poor water sanitation there.

In a bizarre crime, a man has been arrested for allegedly drinking the blood of his wife after withdrawing it through a syringe, because she was unable to meet his dowry demand.

The couple lived at Aanvri Barkheda village under Hindoria Police Station in Damoh district. The husband, Mahesh Ahirwar, has been arrested today, police said.

A case of dowry harassment under section 498 of IPC has been filed against Mahesh.

The woman married him three years ago, and her complaint states that he committed the horrific act nearly every day, because she did not bring money, and a vehicle.

Finally, she left the house after giving birth to a child, and filed the complaint after going to her parents' house at village Shikarpura Piparia in the district.

The 31-year-old man in Sydney, who was allegedly lashed 40 times with a cable has said he was the victim of the Muslim ‘Sharia Law’.

The man was asleep in his unit in Melton Street, Silverwater, when he woke to find four unknown men in his bedroom. Three of the intruders allegedly restrained him on the bed, while the fourth used a cable to lash him 40 times.

He said that he was a recent convert to Wahhabism and had been punished by members of his congregation for drinking, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Police has yet not confirmed whether the alleged attack involved sharia.

The man was lashed 40 times during the alleged assault, which is said to have lasted for 30 minutes.

• Scientists have developed a way to chemically transform ordinary sand into so-called 'super sand' for improved purification of drinking water.
  Ordinary sand, an abundant natural resource of the earth, is a preferred filter material used throughout the world to purify drinking water from municipal water supplies to small domestic water filters, particularly as packed bed filters.
  The new method transforms the regular sand into a 'super sand' with five times the filtering capacity, according to a report in the journal Applied Materials & Interfaces published by the American Chemical Society (ACS).

MUMBAI: If you are below 25 you will not be allowed to drink hard liquor anywhere in the state. Fresh restrictions have been imposed on liquor consumption. The legal drinking age for rum, gin, whisky, vodka and country made liquor has been fixed at 25 years. 

This decision was taken during state cabinet meeting on Wednesday. Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan said that the "legal drinking age for these hard drinks was 1 years previously". 

The legal drinking age for the consumption of mild beer has similarly been fixed at 21 years. The provisions are a part of the government's new de-addiction policy, which was cleared by the cabinet of ministers. 

For all I care they can as well increase it to 50 years but the usual age in villages for arrack or cheap liquor consumption is around 16 years and in cities around 14 years, while some may restrict it to only mild drinks like beer, the rest would go ahead with the hard drinks.

Not all who stared early would become addicts but might give up early or confine to be social drinkers.

with this new policy changes there would be more officials who would be making extra buck in the name of granting permits, etc. or plainly threating to book cased under this act.
