The serial killer Ted Bundy confessed to 30 murders before he was executed in Florida in 1989, but he hinted that the true body count was far higher.

Now a DNA profile of Mr. Bundy — extracted from a vial of blood discovered in a courthouse where it had been stored for three decades — may help investigators around the country figure out if he was responsible for any of their unsolved cases.

The profile was uploaded into the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s DNA database on Friday. David Coffman, chief of forensics at the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, which assembled the profile, said police departments could now enter any DNA evidence they might have from cold cases into the system, to see if there was a match with Mr. Bundy’s DNA.

Mr. Coffman said his department began searching for enough DNA to create a profile after being contacted by the police in Tacoma, Wash., this year. Detectives there were hoping to solve the case of Ann Marie Burr, an 8-year-old girl who disappeared from her house in 1961. Mr. Bundy was 14 at the time and living in Tacoma, prompting speculation that she might have been an early victim. Mr. Bundy denied responsibility for her disappearance.

Mr. Coffman said that he received four or five calls a year from investigators inquiring about Mr. Bundy’s DNA in connection with unsolved cases, but that no full DNA profile had been available. His lengthy killing spree, which left bodies strewn across the Pacific Northwest as well as in Florida and possibly other states, took place well before the advent of DNA technology. A partial DNA profile was created in 2002 from a tissue sample taken at Mr. Bundy’s autopsy, Mr. Coffman said, but it was not complete enough to enter into the F.B.I. database.

OLYMPIA, WASH. —— DNA testing failed to link a new suspect in the D.B. Cooper hijacking case to a necktie that he left on the plane in 1971, the FBI said Monday.

Special Agent Frederick Gutt cautioned that the test did not necessarily rule out the deceased man because investigators did not know whether DNA on the tie was that of the hijacker. Gutt said there were three different DNA samples on the necktie and it was not clear where the hijacker got it.

"There are some questions about the tie itself: Was it a used tie, a borrowed tie?" Gutt said.

Investigators compared the DNA on the tie to the DNA of someone in the new suspect's family, Gutt said. A woman in Oklahoma recently came forward to tell of her belief that her uncle, Lynn Doyle Cooper, was the hijacker — which she based largely on memories from when she was 8 years old.

Gutt said that the FBI had an inconclusive round of fingerprint testing on a guitar strap and that investigators were working with family members to identify other items that could be tested further for fingerprints.

Former International Monetary Fund leader Dominique Strauss—Kahn has pleaded not guilty to trying to rape a maid at a New York City hotel.

Strauss—Kahn pleaded not guilty on Monday in a strong voice, standing between his defense team Ben Brafman and William W. Taylor, as his wife, journalist Anne Sinclair, watched. He already had said he’s innocent.

The 32—year—old maid told police Strauss—Kahn chased her down in his hotel suite, tried to pull down her pantyhose and reportedly forced her to perform oral sex.

Defense lawyers have said they believed forensic evidence wouldn’t support a forcible encounter. They’ve also said they have information that would “gravely undermine” her credibility but haven’t given details.

The 62—year—old Strauss—Kahn is on house arrest under armed guard. The French politician resigned his IMF post after his May 14 arrest.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Evidence from the clothing of a hotel maid matched DNA samples submitted by former IMF Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn who has been charged with sexually assaulting her, U.S. media reported on Monday.

The test results were consistent with what law enforcement officials have said about the account provided by the woman, The New York Times reported, citing a person briefed in the matter.

The Wall Street Journal also reported that tests matched Strauss-Kahn's DNA sample and semen found on the woman's shirt, citing law enforcement officials.
