A new mine in Andhra Pradesh could contain the largest reserves of uranium in the world signalling a major boost for the energy-hungry India.
The Tumalapalli mine in Andhra Pradesh state could provide up to 150,000 tonnes of uranium, Srikumar Banerjee, secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy, told reporters after a four-year survey of the site was completed.
"It's confirmed that the mine has 49,000 tonnes of ore, and there are indications that the total quantity could be three times that amount," Banerjee said.
"If that be the case, it will become the largest uranium mine in the world," he said.
Previous estimates suggested that only about 15,000 tonnes of uranium would be produced at the mine, which is due to start operating by the end of the year.
S.K. Malhotra, spokesman for the Department of Atomic Energy, said experts at the Tumalapalli mine were 'quite hopeful' that the eventual volume from the mine would reach 150,000 tonnes.
But he warned that 'it is not high-grade uranium, it is low-grade uranium. We have not found any high-grade uranium in India to match that found in Australia'.

There area already concerns being expressed on the environmental effects of mining such massive quantity Uranium, on the food and water chains!

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at a news conference on board his special aircraft on Saturday while returning to Delhi from Tanzania.

The Prime Minister fielded questions on a range of issues, from his visit to Africa to domestic politics. Excerpts:

On his African visit: The world is faced with a shortage of raw materials and food, and the more I look upon the possibility of progress in Africa, I am convinced that [it] is going to provide the space for the solution of the global food problem, global resource problems and therefore it is a responsibility for all of us to work together with the countries of Africa to evolve a more equitable, more balanced, more inclusive process of development avoiding the colonial patterns of the past.

On South-South cooperation: The Nonaligned Movement has not lost its global relevance. Globalisation has come to be accepted as unavoidable but we want to develop a style and substance of globalisation which benefits all countries and that is the role which the NAM has to play. Ultimately, all international relations are power relations and it is our desire to pool all the collective weight of the developing countries to make the processes of global growth more equitable, more sustainable and equitable. There is a lot of talk of climate change, for example. We want climate change to be an instrument for strengthening the process of sustainable development, not as a means of impoverishing the countries of the south or leading to deindustrialisation of the south.

Farmers whose lands, which are their sole means of livelihoods should be paid market price and should be assured of fair rehabilitation and resettlement package, guaranteed by the State and Central Governments.

Also project developers should be restricted to acquire only as much land as is required and not a cent more.

In case of not developing the project, within two years, the promoters should return the land to the original owners.
