Mumbai:  The Bombay High Court has admitted the appeal of Emile Jerome Mathew against his conviction in the Neeraj Grover murder case.

Grover, a TV executive, was killed at Kannada actress Maria Susairaj's Mumbai suburb flat on May 7, 2008, by Mathew - Maria's former fiancé.

Neeraj's body was cut into pieces with a knife purchased for the purpose, transported to another suburb in gunny bags, where the corpse was set on fire. Maria and Jerome were arrested soon after.

The Bombay High Court today dismissed a petition filed by the controversial Adarsh Housing Society seeking de-freezing of its bank accounts.

The CBI had in January frozen two bank accounts of the Society after registering a case against 14 accused including several members of the society.

A division bench of justices Ranjana Desai and R.V. More was hearing a petition filed by the Society seeking de-freezing of its two bank accounts with the State Bank of India, Cuffe Parade and Wodehouse Road, to bear legal expenses and day-to-day expenditure of the Society. The accounts have deposits approximately worth Rs 2 crore.

HC dismisses petitions seeking CBI probe into J Dey's murder.

The Bombay High Court today dismissed a batch of petitions seeking a CBI probe into the murder of veteran crime reporter Jyotirmoy Dey.

However, justices Ranjana Desai and R.V. More did not pronounce the reasons in the operative part of their judgement for dismissing the petitions.

A detailed order is likely to be available later.

The petitions seeking CBI probe had been filed in public interest by advocate V P Patil, Mumbai Press Club, Marathi Patrakar Parishad and former scribes S Balakrishna and Ketan Tirodkar. The Crime Branch of city police is at present probing the case.

Opposing the petitions, Advocate General Ravi Kadam argued that police had already arrested eight members of the Chhota Rajan gang for Dey's killing, while stringent provisions of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) being invoked against them.

I believe Mumbai Police have already cracked the case and arrested the culprits!

Working in a bar is “not a sin,” the Bombay High Court observed on Tuesday and said the society needs to change its mindset towards women employed in bars.

“If women can work in the armed forces and be away from home, why can they not work in bars after 9.30 pm? A woman can voluntarily go to a bar as a customer, or even open a liquor bar herself. Then why can she not be employed at such an establishment?” Justice Ranjana Desai asked.

The Bombay High Court today directed the Maharashtra government and police to file on June 21 a status report on the probe into the murder of senior journalist Jyotirmoy Dey.

Justice Ranjana Desai and Justice R V More said in view of the importance of the case, they were also directing the State to ensure that Advocate General Ravi Kadam argues the matter himself.

The bench was hearing two petitions filed by lawyer V P Patil and former journalist Ketan Tirodkar seeking a CBI probe into Mr. Dey’s killing.

The court also allowed applications filed by two journalist organisations - Press Club, Mumbai and Marathi Patrakar Parishad - to intervene in the matter as they also pleaded for a CBI probe into murder of Mr. Dey, who was shot dead by four unidentified assailants in suburban Powai on June 11.

Public prosecutor Pandurang Pol said investigations were on and the city police and its crime branch were moving in the right direction. He said the government was conscious and there was no need to transfer to probe to CBI at this stage.
