Beirut: Syrian authorities pursuing a crackdown against President Bashar Assad's critics banned three prominent opposition figures from leaving the country on Sunday, and security forces killed two people and arrested several others in northern Syria, activists said.

Michel Kilo, Loay Hussein and Fayez Sara were on their way to neighboring Lebanon to take part in a televised panel discussion when they were told by Syrian immigration authorities at the border that they were prohibited from leaving out of concern for their safety in Lebanon.

Hussein denounced what he called an attempt to keep them from speaking on television. The debate was to be aired by the U.S.-funded Al-Hurra television.

"This decision negates all talk about transparency and reforms," said Sara. "It is unjustified and illegal," he added.

In northern Syria, security forces killed two people and detained scores of others during raids and house-to-house arrests in the Khan Sheikon village.

The Local Coordination Committees activist network and the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed the deaths. They said similar arrests were made in the eastern Deir el-Zour and reported intermittent gunfire that erupted in several areas across the country.

Snipers shot dead one man in the Damascus suburb of Saqba overnight after troops deployed in the restive area, they said.

OTTAWA — The federal government has blacklisted the Pakistani Taliban, initially linked to last year's alleged jihadist scheme to bomb Ottawa and to the attempted bombing of New York's Times Square.

The threat of terrorism, "is real, persistent, and evolving, and we remain vigilant in confronting it," Public Safety Minister Vic Toews said in a statement declaring Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) a banned terrorist organization.

The announcement gave no details of any TTP activity directed at Canada but follows a similar move last year by the United States.

In making the announcement Tuesday, Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird said the listing means Canadian assets belonging to members of the group will be frozen and subject to seizure, restraint and forfeiture.

"By listing this group as a terrorist entity, it will be illegal for any individual, group or association to knowingly assist Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan in raising funds, in protecting its assets or in any other way financially assisting the organization," he said.

The TTP made headlines in Canada following "Project Samossa" and the arrests last August of two Ottawa men and a London, Ont., physician in what the RCMP described as "real and serious" terrorism threat to the National Capital Region and Canada's national security.

Police raids on two Ottawa addresses uncovered more than 50 circuit boards police believe were intended to remotely trigger detonators for improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Also seized were what was described as a "vast quantity" of schematics, videos, drawings, instructions and electronic components for IEDs.

Tuesday’s Supreme Court judgment directing the Chhattisgarh government to immediately stop recruiting local tribal people as Special Police Officers for operations against Maoists will be a major operational blow for the Centre’s anti-Maoist policy, state government officials and security officers have told DNA.
Officially, though, the Chhattisgarh government put up a brave face, saying it will seek legal opinion before deciding on the next course of action.
“We have not yet gotten a copy of the judgment,” said Baijendra Kumar, principal secretary to the chief minister, Chhattisgarh.
“Once we get a copy, we will study it and consult legal experts before taking appropriate action. We will respect the decision of the Supreme Court.”
But speaking on condition of anonymity, senior paramilitary officers, state government officials and state police officers were unanimous that the apex court’s decision is a major setback to the Union home ministry’s anti-Maoist operations, and that it will be a shot in the arm for the Maoists.

Iran bans keeping of pet dogs - AFP.

The hardline Iranian parliament has slammed the latest fashion of keeping pet dogs by drafting a bill to criminalise the owning of dogs in private apartments or owners being found with them in public places.
The police chief of Tehran Hossein Sajedinia had declared last week that cars would be seized if there were dogs in them, along with the pets, the Scotsman reports.
Keeping expensive pedigree dogs has become fashionable in northern Tehran despite the fact that canines are considered 'unclean' in Islamic tradition.
The latest bill states that owning dogs is a 'blind imitation of vulgar western culture'.
Similarly, hardliners view jeans as 'decadent', as they believe that it could make youths infertile because they overheat the testicles.
