Chennai: With President Pratibha Patil rejecting the clemency petitions of three killers of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, the mother of one of them on Friday demanded a 'fresh and transparent trial' and claimed her son was not at all connected with it.

"While A1 (prime accused) Nalini's punishment was reduced to life imprisonment from death, why can't the same be applied to my son (Perarivalan) who is only 18th accused?" Arputham Ammal told reporters in Chennai.

She alleged her son was falsely implicated in the case and that he was not at all involved in the crime. Suspecting conspiracy in the trial, she wanted to know why it was handled 'very secretly' by the authorities. "After all, a former Prime Minister has been murdered. So what was the need to keep the investigation a secret?"

She also wanted to how there were exactly 13 Sri Lankan Tamils and 13 Indian Tamils of the 26 found guilty by a local court in Poonamallee in 1998. "The same trend continued even in the final four awarded death sentence by Supreme Court. Two are Sri Lankan Tamils and two are Indian Tamils," she said.

"When the Investigating Officer Ragothaman himself in his book has said they are still clueless on who made the belt bomb, how can they hold my son guilty for buying a 9V battery which they allege was used to make the bomb"? she said.

Ammal said she planned to meet Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to plead her case as "she can understand a mother's feeling better". She also plans to picket against capital punishment.

The accused were arrested in 1991. The Supreme Court in 1999 confirmed the death sentence of the four, including Nalini, whose sentence was later commuted to life.

An Iranian nuclear scientist tied to the country's controversial atomic research program was shot dead Saturday on a street in Tehran, Iranian news outlets reported.

It was the latest in a series of attacks targeting the country's nuclear scientists.

The victim, Dariush Rezai, 45, was described by the semi-official Iranian Students News Agency as a professional associated with the country's Atomic Energy Organization, which oversees the country's complex of nuclear installations, including uranium enrichment facilities that produce fuel for energy reactors.

U.S. and Israeli officials, as well as many Western diplomats and nonproliferation experts, believe Iran is using the cover of a domestic energy program to assemble the building blocks for an eventual weapons program. Rezai, who reportedly held a doctorate in physics, was reportedly shot by gunmen on a motorcycle outside his home in the southeast of the capital, Tehran, according to the semi-official Mehr News Agency.

Up to 44 flights of the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), both domestic and international-bound traffic, were disrupted on Sunday at the three major airports of the country in the aftermath of the murder of two senior Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) activists in Karachi a day earlier.

Senior PPP activist Aamir Shah, who was also the president of an employees’ union body at the PIA head office in Karachi, was shot dead along with another PPP worker Mairaj Khalid Jagirani by unidentified gunmen in Gulistan-e-Jauhar on Saturday evening. Immediately after the incident, several neighbourhoods of the city erupted with gunfire with at least one passenger bus being set ablaze in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, and flights at the Jinnah International Airport also began to be affected severely.

PIA spokesperson Anisa Rehman said that since the incident on Saturday, more than 44 PIA flights were cancelled at the Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad airports, out of which 27 were domestic and 17 international.  At the Jinnah International Airport, 17 flights were cancelled, including nine international and eight domestic. The international flights that were disrupted included those bound for Dubai, Abu Dhabi, London, Kuala Lumpur, Dhaka and Toronto.

KABUL, Afghanistan — A close adviser to President Hamid Karzaiwas killed on Sunday night after two gunmen stormed his walled home here. It was the second killing in less than a week of one of the president’s trusted but controversial political allies.

The aide who was killed on Sunday, Jan Mohammed Khan, served as governor of Oruzgan Province until 2006, when he was removed at insistence of Dutch officials over concerns that he was linked to drug rings. Since then, he had been a regular presence at the presidential palace.

He was killed alongside Mohammed Hasham Watanwal, a member of Parliament from Oruzgan.

The killing was another potentially heavy blow for Mr. Karzai, whose powerful half brother Ahmed Wali Karzai was assassinated on Tuesday by a close associate in southern Afghanistan. It also heightened concerns that militants were trying weaken the president’s standing and unravel the tenuous security gains in the still-violent south after months of intensified fighting by NATO and Afghan forces.

In response to the attack, Afghan police officers, soldiers and intelligence officers swarmed Mr. Khan’s neighborhood in western Kabul, where government officials and businessmen live behind high walls and steel gates, protected by many men with many guns.

Many Afghans and American militarymen believed it was only a matter of time before he would be killed. Their predictions came true on Tuesday morning when Ahmed Wali Karzai, the half brother of the Afghan president and by far the most powerful man in southern Afghanistan, was gunned down by one of his own bodyguards inside his heavily fortified home in Kandahar City. For nearly the past decade he had acted as the region’s ultimate powerbroker. His death will doubtlessly unleash a power struggle among government officials, police and military officers, narcotics smugglers and tribal chieftains who kicked back a large share of their action made possible by his patronage.

His death could bring further turmoil to the strategic region. Without his firm hand to keep all those competing interests in check, southern Afghanistan could become less stable at a time when the U.S. military was confident that its surge forces had seriously weakened the insurgency in the Taliban’s strategic heartland. Over the past 18 months American forces had killed and captured thousands of insurgents, pushing them far away from the key populated areas they had long occupied. Karzai had long been seen as a crucial U.S. ally in the region. In 2009 it was widely reported that he had been on the CIA’s payroll for years. Not only had he provided a degree of stability through his vast patronage politics, the private militia forces that he had raised for the CIA took a heavy toll on the Taliban.

But U.S. militarymen also saw him as a liability. Although never proven, Karzai, 50, was widely accused of being at the center of the southern region’s multi-billion dollar narcotics industry, a charge he vehemently denied. His brother, President Hamid Karzai, also staunchly defended his brother’s innocence. Of late AWK, as the American militarymen called him, had become almost too authoritarian and powerful for his own good. He heavily favored his own tribe, the Popalzai, to the detriment of other clans who bitterly resented his partiality. This favoritism coupled with the fact that he sat atop of a pyramid of corruption ranging from shady real estate deals, to kickbacks on construction contracts, and getting his fair share of the shakedowns of truckers and buses at police posts and bureaucratic bribes certainly helped Taliban recruiters. “He was using all his power to get money from others, and even caused us to stop a road construction project,” says one Afghan aid official who declines to be quoted because of the sensitivity of his comment. “He had guns and money and was the king of Kandahar.” In the end, he may have overplayed his hand. There clearly was growing resentment toward him in the city and province. “There’s an undercurrent of anti-AWK sentiment,” said one American officer in the region last month. “Within six months you may hear a loud ‘pop’ in the city.”

Ahmed Wali Karzai, the younger brother of Afghan president Hamid Karzai and a hugely powerful if controversial figure in southern Afghanistan, was assassinated at his home on Tuesday, officials said.

The killing of his chief local powerbroker will be a huge loss for President Hamid Karzai in Kandahar, the heartland of the Taliban insurgency as NATO troops rush to start withdrawing combat troops after a decade of war.

Initial details were sketchy, with a family friend telling AFP on condition of anonymity that he was killed by a bodyguard while entertaining guests at home and an Afghan intelligence official saying he was shot dead by a guest.

"We can confirm he has been martyred," Kandahar provincial government spokesman Zalmay Ayubi told AFP, providing no further details.

A health official, also speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the information, said Wali Karzai had been shot dead.

"He was shot dead at his house by one of the visiting guests not by a body guard, at around 11:30 am (0700 GMT)," said an official at Afghanistan's intelligence agency, the National Directorate of Security.

• Pakistani intelligence agencies have uncovered a plot to assassinate President Asif Ali Zardari and arrested several persons, TV news channel reported.
  The agencies conducted raids over the past few weeks in Islamabad and Punjab and arrested up to 42 persons, the reports said.

(Reuters) - A suicide bomber killed one of the most powerful men in north Afghanistan, along with a provincial police chief and three German troops, when he attacked a meeting of political and military leaders for once-peaceful Takhar province.

NATO's commander for the northern region and the governor of Takhar province were also in the provincial council gathering, but survived the attack, officials said.

The most high-profile casualty was General Dawood Dawood, police chief of north Afghanistan, a former deputy interior minister and before that a close associate of mujahideen commander Ahmad Shah Masood.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Wednesday alleged that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam was linked with the assassination of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi in an "indirect way."


"That has been our basic charge since a long time. We have always said DMK was behind the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi in an indirect way," the All India [ Images ] Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam chief told mediapersons, responding to queries on reported remarks of Pathmanathan, leader of the now decimated Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, that the DMK's ideology of anti-Brahminism could have influenced the outfit to kill Gandhi.


I lived in Madras (now Chennai) during those days and I believe her: given the hospitality extended by the DMK government to LTTE leaders in Tamilnadu, the-diplomatic-impunity kind with which they used to get away with crimes and carrying guns, wherever they went, terrorizing the local population there.  Later the Jayalalithaa's assumption of power and rounding up all the armed gangs of LTTE (in my own neighborhood)  and packing them off to where they belonged.


She even was the LTTE target for assassination.

NEW DELHI: A top LTTE leader Kumaran Pathmanathan has apologised to India for V Prabhakaran's "mistake" of killing former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

He said Rajiv's assassination was "well planned and done actually with Prabhakaran and (LTTE intelligence chief Pottu Amman). Everyone knows the truth". 


Rajiv Gandhi's Family members have already forgiven Nandini the LTTE Terrorist who has been undergoing her life-sentence, by personally visiting her.  But, Indian Society hasn't forgiven that dastardly action of the dog biting its master.


Given to me the last of the LTTE cadre to be eliminated.  Only then, the thousands of the Tamil Freedom Fighters of Sri Lanka like Rathnasabhapathi, Sri Lankans, the victims of Anuradhapuram massacre and a host of others souls would rest in peace.

It’s now two decades since it happened but the horror still haunts me.

It seems like last night, though it happened on the night of May 21, 1991.

Congress senior leader G K Moopanar and his political pupil Jayanthi Natarajan were bending over the crumpled body lying face down. Moopanar hesitantly tried turning the body to see the face, to check if it was Rajiv Gandhi.

There was no face left, not much of the chest either. The blast had blown off most of the handsome man, and all of India’s hopes of seeing him return as Prime Minister and complete his dream of modernising India.

Thank God, LTTE along with its ruthless Chief, Pirabakaran has been exterminated!

Saudi diplomat shot dead in Pakistan!

ISLAMABAD: A Saudi Arabian diplomat was shot and killed by unidentified attackers in Karachi on Monday, just five days after explosives devices were lobbed at the Saudi consulate in the southern Pakistani port city.

The Saudi diplomat, identified in media reports as Hasan M M Al-Kahtani, was attacked by four gunmen riding two motorcycles while he was driving to work.

The attack occurred a short distance from the Bahrain consulate. 


Nobody is safe in Taliban Dominant Pakistan!
