New Delhi: In more embarrassment coming for Team Anna, reports have emerged that Anna Hazare's aide Arvind Kejriwal was slapped a notice by the Income Tax department last month.

The Income-Tax notice slapped on the Magsaysay Award winner asked him to pay dues of more than Rs 9 lakh.

The notice was served a week before Anna Hazare kicked off his anti-corruption crusade on August 16 at Ramlila Maidan.

Incidentally, officially, Kejriwal is still an IRS employee as the department has not accepted his resignation tendered in 2006.

The I-T department maintains that Kejriwal violated bond conditions and his resignation, will be accepted only once the dues are cleared.

Team Anna member Justice Santosh Hegde says the timing seems vindictive.

"At a time when he has done so much in the movement of Anna Hazare. The government seems to be taking vindictive steps, it looks to me at the first sight. I think people at large will misundersatnd this. Five yrs back he left his job, he signed a bond and now when amidst all these happenings, they slap him this amount and say come and pay within a week, looks vindictive to me," said Justice Hegde.

On being asked whether the government will harass every member of Team Anna, Hegde said,"I don't know, may be so. Such attempts have been going on for a long time, either to denigrate them or to harass them in one way or the other," he said.

The BJP too questioned the government's intentions.

"Arvind Kejriwal is spearheading the battle against corruption. Whenever anyone has raised a voice against corruption in the government, he or she is targeted. It's rather amusing and incidental that whosoever carries a movement against government ends up landing with a notice. It does raise a sense of suspicion whether its the intent of the government," said BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy.

New Delhi:  Hours after Anna Hazare vowed to continue his fast against corruption despite his frail health, a member of his core team has met with Law Minister Salman Khursheed. Anna's aide Arvind Kejriwal reportedly met with the minister. This morning, Mr Kejriwal had said that despite comments to the media about being open to negotiations with Team Anna, the government had yet to formally offer a meeting to the activists.

Anna and his team of advisors - referred to as Team Anna - have so far been insisting that Parliament should adopt their version of the anti-corruption Lokpal Bill. 74-year-old Anna, who is on the eighth day of his fast, reiterated that demand this morning to an audience of thousands at Ramlila Maidan, which is serving as his camp against corruption.  But his advisors today indicated flexibility, suggesting that like the government, they want to find a compromise quickly.

Amid concerns about his health and hunger strike, Anna appeared on stage at his camp against corruption in Delhi and said, "I have been fasting for eight days but I am fine. There is no cause for concern. The doctors attending to me won't let me die. I've lost 5.5 kilos," the 74-year-old said, seen today without his trademark Gandhi topi or cap. His health - and the apparently inexhaustible supply of goodwill that Anna evokes - has the government scrambling to find a solution that would be acceptable not just to Team Anna, but the Opposition as well.

An all-party meeting has been set for 3.30 tomorrow afternoon. Spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar is being used as a channel for negotiations between all three sides - the government, the Opposition and the activists. Sources say the Congress is also pressuring General Secretary Rahul Gandhi to intervene and broker peace with Anna and his associates.

Anna Hazare and Arvind Kejriwal along with their supporters conducted a one-day fast at Rajghat on Wednesday to oppose police action against followers of Baba Ramdev on the night of June 4.

Hazare and Kejriwal are members of the joint committee that is drafting the Lokpal bill. According to them, if the government is hesitant in bringing a strong Lokpal bill, they will be left with no option but to go back to Jantar Mantar and agitate again.

In conversation with rediff.com's Sheela Bhatt, Kejriwal responds to criticism that civic society is trying to usurp the role of elected lawmakers and also explains the need for stronger Lokpal bill to tackle corruption.

On the joint-panel drafting the Lokpal bill 

We have been interacting with this government in the joint committee for the last one and a half months. The government's intentions in dealing with corruption are not clear. We want the government to make its stand public on some of the key issues related to the Lokpal Bill. We have already made our stand clear to the government on these issues. After we receive the government's response, we will decide whether any useful public purpose would be served in attending joint committee meetings.

There have been differences of opinion on critical issues. The government postponed the critical issues in first four meetings. In last meeting the civil society members insisted that we should discuss critical issues first. When we started discussing that we realised there is too much of diversion of opinions.

01) Yes, rightly said, if Tomorrow the types of Lalu Prasad Yadav, A. Raja, Knimozhi or Madhu Koda becomes the Prime Minister, which is quite possible under our current Constitutional Provisions, we need a strong 'Lok Pal' to check their possible excesses!

02) There can always be checks and balances to ensure that the Lok Pal Investigations in to the incumbent Prime Minister's alleged involvement in corrupt practices, would not hinder the performance of  his or her Constitutional Duties!!

03) Why Dr. Manmohan Singh's Government is reluctant to accept this clause?
