Anna adamant, PM holds emergency meet

Zeenews Bureau

New Delhi: Hectic negotiations are underway to break the logjam in Tihar Jail from where Anna Hazare has refused to come out despite Delhi Police accepting five of the six demands of the social activist, who wants to sit on indefinite fast as part of his campaign for a strong Lokpal.

The police have offered Team Anna Ramlila Maidan as a site to sit on fast, instead of Jai Prakash Narain Park. According to sources, the police are ready to allow Anna to sit on fast for seven days, which could be extended later. However, fresh permission would have to be taken after seven days to continue the fast.

But Anna is adamant and has told the police that he wants an unconditional release and that he should be allowed to fast at least for a month.

With the deadlock continuing Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is holding consultations with senior ministers to discuss the issue.

Meanwhile, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi is also believed to have reserved the Ramlila Maidan for Team Anna till August 30, to hold fast there.

“Top police officials have met Anna inside the prison. Talks are going on for the number of days the fast will go on. We have asked for 30 days,” Kiran Bedi, a member of Team Anna, said while addressing the sea of supporters outside Tihar Jail.

Delhi Police is reported to have agreed to allow as many numbers of vehicles at protest site as can be accommodated till the traffic is not disturbed. Further, the erection of tents and use of loudspeaker will be allowed but till 10.00 pm, the time limit set by the Supreme Court.

Earlier, P Chidambaram held a high-level meet of Home Ministry officials to discuss the impasse.

The developments came even as thousands of Anna supporters marched from India Gate to Jantar Mantar in support of the cause.

Trying to convince Anna: Sri Sri

Earlier, spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, who met Anna Hazare inside Tihar Jail, said that all efforts are being taken to persuade the Gandhian leader to end the deadlock over his indefinite stay there.
