Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday raised a question whether a resolution by the State Assembly seeking mercy for Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru on the lines of Tamil Nadu House would also generate a “muted” reaction.
“If J&K assembly had passed a resolution similar to the Tamil Nadu one for Afzal Guru would the reaction have been as muted? I think not,” Mr. Abdullah posted on social networking site Twitter.
His comments came a day after the Tamil Nadu assembly passed a unanimous resolution urging President Pratibha Patil to reconsider the mercy plea of three convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case who are facing death sentence.

02) In the above, I do not read his declaration of any intention of passing a resolution in favour of Afzal Guru. He merely stated, that if such resolution is made by the J&K Assembly in favour of Afzal Guru, would the reaction would be so muted as it was in the case of TN Assembly Resolution in favour of Rajiv Gandhi Killers.
03) TN Assembly claims that it is opposed to the death penalty and so they ask reprieve for the killers of Rajiv Gandhi.
04) My question is then why TN Assembly do not pass a resolution for reprieve for all those who are on the death row and also not try to fight for the total abolition of death penalty?
05) As after Anna ending fast, there are not many newsy issues so some news channels have invented one in the Omar's Tween and started conducting hot-debates on this issue, condemning Omar for his indiscretion to lack of patriotism.
06) I hold the right of J&K Assembly to enjoy any and every privilege enjoyed by any other State Assembly in the Indian Republic.
07) As for the death penalty, even now the Courts in India follow a strict scrutiny against the principle of 'the rarest of rare cases of revolting murders only'.
08) And, if the overall public sentiment is in favour of abolishing the death penalty, it should be incorporated in our Criminal Laws by the Parliament of India and not be imposed on selective basis.
09) If death penalty is abolished, then in 'the rarest of rare cases of revolting murders only' it should be "Life Imprisonment, till the natural death of the convict, without any remission, whatsoever"; not even by the President or the Governors who, at the instance of the Governments of the Day, grant pardon during the Independence Day.
