Maval: Three people were killed after police opened fire on protesting farmers on the Mumbai-Pune expressway on Tuesday. The farmers were opposing a proposed water tunnel project that will divert water from the Pawna dam to Pune's satellite towns. Besides, they said building the tunnel would lead to land acquisition.

29-year-old Shyam Tupe was killed in Tuesday’s police firing. The villagers, who have already had their land taken away for the dam and the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, don't want to part with more.

“Shyam's land had been taken for the Pawna dam, then another part was taken for the expressway construction and now they were taking it for the pipeline, where will people go?” said Vitthal, a villager.

At Shyam Tupe's house the villagers have formed a protective ring not letting media persons and outsiders near the family as the family has not been told of Shyam's death.

Meanwhile, in Yelse village the Thakars cannot believe the family matron Kantabai is no more. "We are simple people didn't expect this," said relative of Kantabai.
