David Letterman responded on Monday to the threat posted against him last week on a message board used by Al Qaeda in his usual fashion: he made jokes about it.

In his monologue during Monday’s taping of his CBS show, Mr. Letterman made numerous jokes about the threat, some that even hark back to his old rivalry with Jay Leno. He opened with a direct reference to the threat:

“Thank you very much for being here tonight. We have great audiences night in and night out, but tonight especially, it means a lot to me. Tonight, you people are more, to me, honestly, more than an audience … you’re more like a human shield.”

The rest of his monologue continued on that theme. Some highlights:

“I’m so sorry, I’m a little late coming out. Backstage, I was talking to the guy from CBS.  We were going through the CBS life insurance policy to see if I was covered for jihad.”
