Unwavering support: Dominique Strauss-Kahn and his wife Anne Sinclair walk out of New York federal court after a judge ended his house arrest on July 1.

She has loyally supported her husband, Dominique Strauss Kahn, since he was accused of raping a chambermaid at a New York hotel in May.

But behind the scenes, heiress and French television presenter Anne Sinclair broke down as she heard of the allegations for the first time.

According to French magazine Le Nouvel Observateur, Sinclair was so distraught when she received the news her husband faced jail time she 'howled in pain, a long moan, like a stunned animal,' and could not form words for hours after.

Madame DSK, a biography by Catherine Rambert and Renaud Revel published last week in France, includes a detailed account of Sinclair’s evening on May 14, when the alleged incident occurred.

She was reportedly getting ready for a surprise party for French singer Patrick Bruel when she received a call from her husband that there was a 'serious problem' in New York and that he had lost the cell phone issued to him by the International Monetary Fund.

Without going into details, he asked if she could reach out to his longtime personal advisor, PR guru Stephane Fouks, and ended the phone call.

Sinclair was concerned but assumed he was trying to diffuse a political problem. A the time, her husband, 62, was still the managing director of the IMF - and was viewed as a possible French president.
