DMK president M Karunanidhi has taken a swipe at chief minister Jayalalithaa for holding the vigilance portfolio even though the state vigilance department was conducting a case of disproportionate assets against her in a Bangalore court.

She must emulate her Kerala counterpart Oommen Chandy, who had relinquished the vigilance portfolio after a court ordered probe in a palmolein import case, Mr Karunanidhi wrote in his party organ Murasoli.
“When a vigilance probe is on against her, it is entirely improper for her to hold the portfolio. The Kerala chief minister had not only relinquished the vigilance portfolio but also offered to legally face the case. One has to have the courage to say that”, the DMK chief said.
Mr Chandy shed the vigilance portfolio last week after a court directed that his role be investigated in the palmolein import deal in 1992, when he was the Kerala finance minister in the Karunankaran government.
Responding to Ms Jayalalithaa’s allegation that he had ‘merely enacted a drama’ when he held a three-hour fast on the Sri Lankan Tamil issue, Mr Karunanidhi listed out the various steps he had taken since 1956 when he first proposed a resolution in support of the Sri Lankan Tamils in the DMK general council meet under its founder, the late Annadurai.
