A sea of humanity turned out to witness the grand spectacle of the famous Car Festival of Lord Balabhadra, Lord Jagannath and Devi Subhadra in the coastal town of Puri on Sunday.
Decorated with colourful fabrics, three majestic chariots, Nandighosa (Lord Jagannath), Taladwaja (Balabhadra) and Darpadalan (Subhadra), were kept ready in front of the 12th Century Jagannath Temple in Puri on Sunday morning.
Amidst shouting of ‘Haribol’ and ‘Jai Jagannath’, three deities were ceremonially brought out through the Lion’s Gate, the main entrance of the temple. As soon as the idols were taken out of the temple, devotees ecstatically screamed to welcome the deities’ nine-day-long annual outing.
Idols were installed in the respective charriots while devotees from all corners of the globe jostled for space to have a glimpse of the deities. Some devotees were seen crying in a charged atmosphere while several dropped to the ground as a mark of their devotion to the lord.
