In what they are calling a major breakthrough in senior scribe J Dey’s murder investigation, the crime branch officers on Saturday night arrested Vinod Govardhandas Asrani alias Vinod Chembur - a known Chhota Rajan associate who, they believe, was Dey’s friend.
Cops believe that Asrani played a crucial hand in to Dey’s killing and is probably aware of the real reason behind Chhota Rajan ordering a hit on the senior scribe.
Vinod, who is a bookie with known links with underworld gangs, was taken into custody as soon as he landed at the Mumbai’s domestic airport by Kingfisher’s 9 pm flight from Delhi.
Vinod had left the city as soon as the Property Cell of Mumbai Crime Branch declared the arrests of seven members of Rajan gang on June 25 in connection with the case.
“Vinod is the closest aide of Rajan in Mumbai. It has emerged that he had called Dey to a bar in Thane three days before the murder. We have been closely monitoring his movements. Immediately after we declared the arrests in Dey’s case, Vinod packed his bags and left for Gangotri and Haridwar along with his wife and an associate.
It can’t be a coincidence that he returned soon after Rajan gave a TV interview distancing himself from the murder,” a senior officer at the crime branch said.
He added that another senior journalist was also present at the bar. On Sunday, crime branch officers questioned the journalist for three hours.
