The all-party meeting on the Lokpal Bill, after the three-hour confabulations at the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh's residence, passed a resolution, saying: “The Government should bring before the next session of Parliament a strong and effective Lokpal Bill following the established procedures.”
Earlier, the Prime Minister affirmed his commitment to the enactment of the Lokpal Bill, which seeks to check corruption in high places. He also indicated the Bill could be brought before Parliament in the coming monsoon session.
The Prime Minister said, “We, in government, are committed to the enactment of a Lokpal Act, which provides for a strong, effective and quick institutional arrangement for tackling corruption in high places.”
However, he added that it was important that such an institutional arrangement enjoys the support of “as large a section of people as possible and that there is the widest possible consensus regarding the Bill”.
