CAIRO: The Syrian government has vowed to retaliate after claiming ''armed gangs'' had killed 120 police officers, security personnel and civilians in the northern town of Jisr al-Shughour - an account that, if true, suggests a violent shift in the Syrian uprising.
Opposition figures and residents disputed official media reports about what had taken place. Some said the violence was set off by the defection of soldiers sent to besiege the town on Saturday. They had sought ''refuge with the citizens'', according to the opposition group Local Co-ordinating Committees in Syria.
State media described a ''massacre'' on Monday at the hands of unidentified gunmen and said residents were ''pleading'' for the army to intervene. But state television provided few details of the dead and no images of the town.
Conflicting claims are confusing!
