A South Carolina woman thought she was buying an iPad for dirt-cheap, but ended up with a block of wood. According to a police report, two men approached 22-year-old Ashley McDowell in a McDonald's parking lot to sell her a new iPad for $300. They explained they were able to offer her a discounted price because they bought the iPad in bulk. McDowell made the purchase after negotiating the men down to $180 (a steal compared to paying at least $500 in the store). But when McDowell came home and opened her new gadget, which was in a FedEx box, she found nothing more than an iPlank: a dressed-up block of wood. The "tablet" screen had black tape around the perimeter and small square-shaped iPad icons such as Safari, mail, and photos taped to the front. After discovering the fake, McDowell called the police and filed a report. As you might imagine, social media aren't being kind to the victim or the criminals in this case. One person tweeted, "Idiots. Everyone involved." Another was surprised that the thieves created such an obvious but complex replica. One tweeter put a positive spin on the situation, saying the fake iPad is "actually kind of awesome found art." Do you think McDowell has a right to press charges? Tell me on Facebook.com/AdrianaDiazNews and Twitter @AdrianaTweeting!

10 recommended apps for our tablet-enabled MPs!

Based on the Parliament Standing Committee on IT's recommendation the Parliament Secretariat decided to sanction a maximum of Rs 50,000 for the Members of Parliament to buy an Apple iPad 2 or a Samsung Galaxy Tab. The idea behind the move is to make the Parliamentary work speedier and paper free. For MPs who aren't very comfortable with the new-age gadgets, special orientation classes are also being organised.

Now when our tablet-wielding MPs walk into the Parliament House, they should have the stuff in their 10-inch gadgets that help them be better at their job. Here are our pick of 10 apps that our MPs should install on to the tablet devices to make the best of it.

1. Google Earth: The general perception is that politicians only visit their constituency only when an election is round the corner. At least, with a Google Earth app they can get a bird's eye view of the region from which they have been elected. Also to be a better leader, they not only need to know the people but also the land. What better than Google Earth to achieve this. (http://www.google.com/mobile/earth/)

2. TweetDeck: In an era of social networking, our MPs can no longer afford to remain outside the network. Even though a majority of the population still do not have access to the Internet, there is a sizeable chunk who do and that includes many who go on to shape public opinion. TweetDeck is an application that brings the power of a number of influential social media services inside one single app and makes the online social experience an easier and seamless experience. Since our MPs (going by the speeches they make) are not known for their brevity the Deck.ly feature is something that the men and women in khadi will appreciate. (http://www.tweetdeck.com/)

3. Evernote: With a third of the Lok Sabha and over half of the Rajya Sabha being in the 60+ age bracket, memory might not be their best asset. But now with their sleek and powerful tablet devices they can "Remember everything" with Evernote and easily access whatever they asked the app to remember. (http://www.evernote.com/)

The postponement is part of patent dispute with Apple Inc that centres on its likeness to the US company’s iPad 2.
Apple had demanded that Australian Federal Court Justice Annabelle Bennett order the postponement.
“Following today’s hearing in the Federal Court of Australia, Samsung has agreed to delay the launch of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 pending the court’s decision in the week commencing September 26, 2011,” Samsung said in a statement issued to The Australian newspaper.
“It should be noted that the court has not issued an injunction against the sale of the Galaxy Tab 10.1, and the court did not make any ruling during today’s hearing,” the statement added.
The electronics giants fell out in April, when Apple sued Samsung in the United States alleging that the Galaxy phone and tablet were copies of the iPhone and iPad.

Samsung responded with a legal action of its own.

London: The Da Vinci Code may have been a popular e-book for years, but now readers around the world can view the manuscripts of Leonardo da Vinci's Codex Arundel in high definition on iPad as the British Library launches its 'e-book treasures' series.

The Italian manuscript written in Da Vinci's characteristic 'mirror writing' - left-handed and moving from right to left - is a collection of notes, drawings and short treatises on subjects ranging from the physical properties of water to descriptions of a prehistoric sea monster.

The loose papers which form the codex date from various periods of Da Vinci's career and were collected together in a bound volume after his death in 1519.

"The iPad allows for greater intimacy and engagement akin to reading the original and we are delighted to be the first to provide full access to some of our unique treasures in this way," said Frances Brindle of the British Library in London.

"The Library is committed to maximizing access to all of its collections and increasingly, digital variations of books and manuscripts are allowing us to do just that."

The e-books feature page-turning technology to recreate the experience of holding the manuscripts and will enable users to access in-depth detail about the works they are viewing, including written, video and audio interpretations.

Mercator's Atlas is another precious manuscript available to download alongside Da Vinci's Arundel Codex.
