Tobacco consumption is causing nearly half of head and neck cancers in the country, a study by a Delhi-based cancer research centre said.


“Nearly 50 per cent of head and neck cancers are caused by the use of tobacco. This is contrary to the popular belief that consumption of tobacco only causes oral and lung cancer,” said the study by Delhi’s Dharamshila Hospital and Research Centre.



A total of 915 cases registered and operated under surgical oncology (head and neck) from 2000 to 2010 were considered.

Heavy use of mobile phones and other wireless communication devices could possibly cause cancer, the World Health Organisation has said and asked people to use texting and free-hands devices to reduce the risk.
The electromagnetic fields generated by such devices are “possibly carcinogenic to humans,” the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) announced at the end of an eight-day meeting on Tuesday in Lyon, France.
A group of 31 experts from 14 countries has “reached this classification based on its review of the human evidence coming from epidemiological studies”, ABC News reported.
To reduce the direct exposure, it is suggested that we use speaker phone and ear-phones, when necessary.
