In southern New Jersey, a 20-year-old woman called her boyfriend early Sunday to tell him that she was trapped in her car with water that was up to her neck. Then she called the police. Her body was found about eight hours later, still inside her car, which had been swept away during a flash flood on Route 40 in Salem County.

Farther north in the state, a postal inspector waded through a flooded road as he tried to get to the building in Kearny where he worked. He apparently stepped into an unseen drainage ditch and was sucked into 10 to 12 feet of flowing water, the Kearny police said. His body was found 100 yards from the entrance to the building.

In the Catskill Mountains, in New York, National Guard troops worked feverishly to rescue people who were stranded in several rural mountain towns in Greene County.

“We’ve been crushed up here,” said Shaun S. Groden, the county administrator. “We have major flash floods. We have bridges that have been blown out. We have people stranded, people who have gone up to the second floor of their homes.”

In New York City, Tropical Storm Irene’s winds did not come close to meeting expectations, which meant that there was no sea of shattered glass from Manhattan’s forest of high-rise buildings and no waves of water cascading across low-lying neighborhoods.

Anna Hazare, who was admitted in a hospital here after he ended his 12-day fast for a strong Lokpal Bill, is stable and moving towards normalcy, doctors said on Monday.

“Nobody knows when he will be discharged. His condition is stable. He has to be monitored. Usually, it takes 2—3 days.

When his parameters are established and his body starts tolerating and digesting food, only then he can go,” Chairman of Medanta Medicity, Dr. Naresh Trehan, who was monitoring Mr. Hazare’s health during his fast, said.

The 74-year-old activist was brought to the hospital on Sunday after he called off his hunger strike.

Mr. Hazare wants to take rest and has declined requests to meet him because he is “still very weak”, Dr. Trehan said, adding various tests have established that the activist’s liver and kidneys were normal.

The National Hurricane Center says Irene is moving up the mid-Atlantic coast, lashing the region with heavy rains and blustery winds.

The center said at 2 a.m. EDT Sunday that Irene’s sustained winds were topping out at 80 mph (130 kph) with higher gusts and the storm is moving north-northeast at 17 mph (28 kph). It was centered about 195 miles (315 km) south-southwest of New York City.

Hurricane warnings extend north to Nantucket, Massachusetts. A tropical storm warning extends all the way to the south coast of Nova Scotia, Canada.

New Delhi:  Doctors attending on Anna Hazare on Saturday expressed worry over the fasting social activist's falling blood pressure and said he should end his fast, which entered day 12, as his health has begun to deteriorate.

"His blood pressure that was earlier steady has come down and his heart rate has increased. The cause of worry is the falling blood pressure," Naresh Trehan who is monitoring Hazare's health along with his team, told reporters here at Ramlila Maidan.

"His blood pressure has come down from 140 mmHG (millimetres of mercury) to 120 mmHG," Trehan said. "We have taken blood samples. Results will be available by evening."

Ahead of the debate on Lokpal issue in Parliament, Anna Hazare on Saturday broke his silence of nearly 38 hours and addressed his supporters, declaring that he will continue his protest till his last breath for a strong anti-corruption law.

As Anna Hazare’s fast spilled over to the 12th day, doctors today raised concerns over his health saying they are more worried as the Gandhian’s blood pressure has dipped while heart beat has increased.

More doctors have been stationed at Ramlila Maidan to keep a watch on the health of the 74-year-old Gandhian, whose hunger strike for a strong Lokpal has crossed 260 hours.

As Anna Hazare’s fast entered the 11th day on Friday, the Gandhian lost seven kilos, but doctors said he appeared to be healthy.

“He has lost seven kg till now. His blood pressure and heart beat are okay. He seems to be healthy. He is holding up,” Dr Ravi R Kesliwal, who examined Mr. Hazare, told reporters here.

He said doctors were constantly monitoring his health.

Doctors last night said the Gandhian’s condition was “stable” but there is reason to worry.

New Delhi: Amid mounting concern about Anna Hazare's health as his fast continued for the tenth day, doctors on Thursday night said the Gandhian's condition was "stable" but there is reason to worry.

"Till now his condition is stable. But there is reason to worry as today is 10th day of his fast," Dr Naresh Trehan told reporters at the Ramlila Ground after examining 74-year-old Hazare.

Trehan, who along with his team, has been monitoring Hazare's health every two hours said the Gandhian has already lost over six Kgs of weight and doctors will constantly monitor his condition throughout the night.

"He has already lost over six Kgs of weight... We will keep a close watch on him throughout the night," Trehan said. Hazare was 72 kg before he began his fast on August 16.

He said results of various test to conducted on Hazare will be announced on Friday morning.

The makers of major browsers are facing an uphill task in persuading a reluctant section of users to upgrade their software to the latest versions, despite these coming free of cost.

Microsoft, for instance, has found it challenging to get users to let go of an outdated version 6 of its browser, Internet Explorer (IE). Now, almost a decade after it released version 6, there are still a good number of people who are using it in different parts of the world. And this, when Microsoft has already begun promoting version 9.

It has even set up a site (www.ie6countdown.com), which displays statistics relating to the usage of this particular version of the browser worldwide, to ‘educate' users about the need for a switchover.

Figures for July indicated that 9.7 per cent of global browser use was accounted for by IE6, but the share is much more in certain countries — China has 30.5 per cent of people using this browser, South Korea 16.9 per cent and India, just under 9 per cent. The target is to bring down the percentage of global users of IE 6 to below 1 per cent.

The company has consistently urged users to upgrade to the latest version of the browser “since helping our customers become more secure and up-to-date is a top priority for Microsoft,” said Senthilkumar Sundaram, Director-Internet Explorer, Consumer and Online, Microsoft India, when asked about the IE 6 usage trend recently.

This is true not just about Internet Explorer but many other browsers as well. “About 50 per cent of the market is not using the absolute latest and greatest of their browser of choice. About 10 per cent are using a really old browser like IE6. There are huge regional differences here,” says Jan Standal, Vice-President, Desktop Products, Opera Software.

When the major browsers, including Firefox and Google Chrome, are free products, why is it that a section of users seem reluctant to go for the upgrades, which come in faster cycles these days?

Predictably, some users feel that installing and switching over to the new version of the browser could prove a disruptive experience, but the makers of Firefox found in a survey, about a year ago, that there are two other prominent reasons for not upgrading — users simply did not have the time for it or found no reason to opt for change when everything was working fine with the old browser. Their surveys over the years have also found that the some of the diverse reasons for users sticking on to the old versions may vary from season to season.

Mr. Standal says: “People have various reasons not to upgrade. Mostly, it is because they don't care to or don't know how to. This is mostly solved for people using modern browsers, as all browsers except Internet Explorer now have automatic updates.” They hardly pose hassles to people when upgrading. Besides, there are companies that have a policy of not updating browsers “due to a fear of their internal systems not working with new browsers.”
