A Chinese court has jailed a Tibetan monk for 11 years, saying he hid a fellow monk who set himself on fire in an apparent anti-Beijing protest.

The court convicted him of "intentional homicide", saying he had denied the man emergency treatment.

The incident happened in March in Sichuan province's Aba county, where there is a large ethnic Tibetan community.

It sparked protests and a security clampdown in the area.

The circumstances surrounding the monk's death remain unclear.

Chinese authorities say the man - named as Rigzin Phuntsog of the Kirti monastery - set himself on fire on 16 March and died because he was hidden by fellow monks for several hours, preventing him getting treatment.

At the time, Tibetan rights groups reported that witnesses saw police put out the flames, then begin beating the monk, at which point monks and local people took him to the monastery before taking him to hospital some hours later.

Lobsang Sangay sworn-in as Tibet's PM-in-exile!

New Delhi:  Lobsang Sangay, political successor to the Dalai Lama, was sworn-in as Prime Minister of the Tibetan government-in-exile at a public ceremony in Dharamshala on Monday.

Mr Sangay, 43, was administered the oath of office at a ceremony in the central courtyard of the main Tibetan temple, opposite to the office of the Dalai Lama. He succeeds Samdhong Rinpoche as the Kalon Tripa or the Prime Minister of the Central Tibetan Administration.

The oath will be administered by Ngawang Phelgyal, the Chief Justice Commissioner, in the presence of the spiritual leader of Tibetans -- the Dalai Lama.

Mr Sangay will be the first to take charge of the office after the Dalai Lama announced his decision to devolve his political authority to the elected leadership. These changes were ratified by the Tibetan Parliament in May.

Born in Darjeeling and educated in Delhi, Mr Sangay pursued higher studies in the US and was a senior Fellow at the Harvard Law School before being elected as the Kalon Tripa in April.

The US considers Tibet as part of China and does not support independence for the region, the White House said today.

"The US position on the status of Tibet has not changed. We consider Tibet to be part of the People's Republic of China and do not support independence for Tibet," White House Press Secretary Jay Carney told reporters at his daily news conference.

The weekend meeting of the US President Barack Obama with Tibetan spritual leader, the Dalai Lama, Carney said was an expression of his support for the preservation of Tibet's unique traditions and the rights of the Tibetan people.

China on Saturday urged the US to immediately withdraw a decision to arrange US President Barack Obama's meeting with the exiled Tibetan leader Dalai Lama.

"The issue regarding Tibet concerns China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and we firmly oppose any foreign official to meet with the Dalai Lama in any form," said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hong Lei.

Hong's comments came in response to a question concerning a release on the White House website saying the US President Barack Obama was scheduled to meet the Dalai Lama July 16, China's official Xinhua news agency reported.
