Two dozen people sit before small fire pits and offer select herbs to the flames as a swamiji chants hymns from ancient Indian scriptures.
It’s like any yagna, except that those consigning herbs to the fire are people suffering from different health problems and the herbs are central to their cure.
Homa or yagna therapy is becoming popular in the city and hundreds of people with chronic and incurable diseases are turning to this alternative treatment, which is said to combine time-tested traditional and scientifically proven, herbs. People addicted to alcohol are also trying it as a de-addiction method.
Homa therapy claims to cure diabetes, infertility, hypertension, cardiac problems, high blood cholesterol, and skin disorders.
The basic ingredients used in homa or yagna are specific herbs that are said by homa practitioners to have properties to cure the specific problem. So a childless couple will be given herbs said to enhance fertility levels, while a diabetic is given herbs with antihyperglycemic properties.
“The strategy is three-fold. We use medicinal plants in homa therapy and patients inhale the medicated smoke or fumes. We also give them herbal formulations for oral intake, and third, we recommend a strict diet regime combined with enhanced physical activity."
"In a way, we are combing the ancient wisdom of our saints and modern knowledge of herbs to treat health problems that are complicated and difficult to treat through the modern system of medicine,” said Swami Satyaveer of the Suvigna Ashramam at Naraspur village on the outskirts of the city, who practices this form of healing.
