The menace of unsolicited text messages (SMS) in mobile phones is likely to come to an end in six weeks when the ‘Do Not Disturb (DND)' number 1909 becomes operational, Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal informed the Rajya Sabha on Friday.
Mobile phone users can opt for not receiving SMS in seven categories such as real estate, credit cards, consumer durables, banking and finance, by registering their number in the National Do-Not-Call (NDNC) registry by calling or sending an SMS to toll-free number 1909, he said during question hour.
“This will be in place in the next six weeks. Users can opt for not receiving messages for any of the seven categories or all of these. Once a number is registered, the server will block unsolicited text message if a tele-marketer tries to send it,” he said.
The NDNC Registry is a database with a list of all telephone numbers of subscribers who do not want to receive Unsolicited Commercial Communication (UCC). Mr. Sibal said the government would impose very heavy fine on tele-marketers who violate the DND.
On first offence, a fine of Rs.25,000 will be imposed and a similar amount will be imposed on subsequent five offences after which the registration of the tele-marketer will be cancelled.
