London: Prime Minister David Cameron risks his government's austerity drive, particularly its plans to cut police funding, becoming the focus of Britons' fears about the future after the worst looting and rioting in decades hit English cities this week.

The Conservative party leader took a hardline approach to the violence on Thursday, vowing "the lawless minority" would be hunted down and punished, and blaming the police for their initial response.

Now that the violence has died down, Cameron is under growing pressure to abandon plans to cut police numbers after trouble spread from the capital to several other cities over four chaotic nights, severely stretching police resources.

The country is divided over what caused the looting and arson, but many fear the reductions in police numbers implicit in the government's deep public spending cuts could leave the country exposed if more trouble erupts.

Community leaders and some commentators say poverty, unemployment and a bitter sense of exclusion among many young people cannot be ignored, and public sector cuts are likely to hit the poorest in society hardest.

Ed Miliband, leader of the opposition Labor party, took care not to blame the government's planned cuts directly for the violence, but told the BBC, "The cuts that are being made are very bad for our society."

Cameron blamed the violence on a minority of opportunistic criminals and on society's failings. "When you have deep moral failures you don't hit them with a wall of money," he told Parliament in an emergency debate.

Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan pressed Syria's Bashar Al-Assad to put an end to violence Tuesday, in the two leaders' first telephone conversation since their once-close relations appeared to sour a week ago.

The phone call came as Syria's military extended a crackdown to new cities and refugees continued to cross the country's northern border into Turkey. The number of Syrians in Turkish camps Tuesday afternoon was 8,500, Turkey's Deputy Prime Minister Cemil Cicek said in televised remarks.

Mr. Cicek also said Syria's increasingly isolated leader had initiated the call to congratulate Mr. Erdogan after his victory in elections Sunday.

The two leaders have enjoyed a particularly close relationship, but Mr. Erdogan appeared to lose patience when refugees fled unrest in the town of Jisr Al-Shoghour, close to the Turkish border, just a week before the polls. He accused Damascus of savagery and of failing to listen.

On Tuesday, Mr. Erdogan told the Syrian leader to "refrain from violence and end the unrest," according to Turkey's official news agency, Anadolu Ajansi. He also told Mr. Assad to draw up and implement reforms, the agency said. Both are messages Mr. Erdogan has delivered before, and there was little sign Tuesday that Mr. Assad was responding.

As more and more restive towns are occupied by the Syrian Armies the more and more refugees are crossing into the Turkey!

AMMAN (Reuters) - Syrian protesters defied a nationwide crackdown by security forces on Friday, witnesses said, as world leaders voiced outrage at President Bashar al-Assad's bloody suppression of the unrest.

Security forces killed two demonstrators in the Qatana suburb of Damascus and fired at protesters calling for the "overthrow of the regime" in the eastern city of Deir al-Zor, a rights group and residents said.

Small demonstrations also broke out in Damascus districts of Barzeh, Rukn al-Din and Qaboun, the suburbs of Saqba and Hajar al-Aswad, and in Latakia on the coast and Deraa in the south.

Assad's time too has come, it seems!
