New Delhi: Petrol prices in India are costlier than the US but cheaper than European countries, Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas R P N Singh said Tuesday.

Petrol in Delhi is priced at Rs 63.70 a litre, while the same in USA is priced at Rs 42.82 per litre. The price in India is more than any of its neighbours -- Pakistan (Rs 41.81 a litre), Sri Lanka (Rs 50.30 per litre), Bangladesh (Rs 44.80 a litre) and Nepal (Rs 63.24 per litre).

But the rate in Delhi is cheaper than France (Rs 94.97 per litre), Germany (Rs 95.99 a litre), the United Kingdom (Rs 96.39 per litre) and Italy (Rs 96.79 a litre), he said in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha here.

Higher rates for petrol in India are due to higher incidence of taxes. Without taxes, petrol would cost Rs 23.37 per litre in Delhi.

The diesel price in Delhi, at Rs 41.29 per litre, is cheaper than in the US and European nations, but costlier than Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Without taxes, diesel would cost Rs 24.90 a litre.

Petroleum Minister says petrol price would be cut if global crude prices continue to slip further - DC.

Petroleum Minister S. Jaipal Reddy said on Tuesday that if global crude oil prices continue to slip further, petrol price would be lowered.
"If the prices globally come down sharply and in a stable way, naturally the prices of petrol would be adjusted downwards," Reddy said.
Petrol prices have been de-regulated and now oil-marketing companies price the fuel on the retail level according to global movement of crude. This has led to sharp increases in the petrol prices.
Other fuels like diesel, kerosene and cooking gas are still under government control. The petroleum ministry had hiked prices of fuel in June as global crude oil prices shot up.
Following Standard and Poor's downgrade of US's sovereign debt rating and fears of the US seeing a double-dip recession, oil prices have witnessed a sharp decline.

Various political parties, including the BJP and Left parties, have slammed the ruling government for the hike in prices of petroleum products.
Political parties, including the Left and BJP, today came down heavily on the government for striking “another blow” on the common man by hiking the fuel price and staged demonstrations in many parts of the country demanding its immediate rollback.

Slamming the government for the hike, the Left parties asked all their units to immediately conduct hartals, demonstrations and other protest actions.

The CPI(M), CPI, RSP and Forward Bloc said it was “another cruel blow” to the common people as the increase in diesel price would raise transportation cost and affect farmers, while those in kerosene and LPG cylinders would burden the poor.
