AP / The Hindu / JAKARTA, August 4, 2011.

A helicopter chartered by an Australian mining company slammed into a mountain in eastern Indonesia, killing all 10 passengers and crew, the head of the search and rescue team said on Thursday.
The Bell 412 -- carrying two Australians, two South Africans and six Indonesians -- lost contact with authorities Wednesday afternoon minutes after takeoff from the city of Manado on Sulawesi island, said Lucky Pondaag, an airport spokesman.
It was heading to Newcrest’s Gosowong Mine on the island of Halmahera.
A search and rescue team discovered the wreckage at around 2 a.m., said Ludianto, head of the operations, who goes by only one name.
There was only one survivor at the scene, he said, an Indonesian who later died of his injuries at the hospital. The bodies of the nine others have been transported to Manado.

The Mount Lokon volcano spews thick smoke and ash into the air in Tomohon on the northeastern part of Indonesia's Sulawesi island - AFP.

A volatile volcano in central Indonesia unleashed its most powerful eruption yet Sunday, spewing hot ash and smoke thousands of feet (meters) into the air and sending panicked villagers racing back to emergency shelters. There were no immediate reports of casualties.
Mount Lokon, located on northern Sulawesi island, has been dormant for years but rumbled back to life late last week.
A series of overnight blasts Thursday and Friday claimed one life — a woman who suffered a heart attack as she fled.
But Surono, a government volcanologist who uses only one name, said Sunday's 10:35 a.m. eruption released the greatest amount of energy so far, shooting soot and debris 11,400 feet (3,500 meters) into the sky.
"We're hoping this helped ease pressure building up behind the magma dome and that we'll now start seeing a reduction in activity," he said. "But it's too early to know."

The Lokon volcano erupts near Tomohon. The Indonesian volcano erupted late July 14, spewing rocks, lava and ash hundreds of metres into the air, three days after its alert status was raised to the highest level - AFP.

An Indonesian volcano has erupted, spewing rocks, lava and ash hundreds of metres into the air, an official said Friday, just days after its alert status was raised to the highest level.
There has been a significant rise in volcanic activity at Mount Lokon on Sulawesi island since June 9, prompting more than 4,400 people to flee.
"There was a big eruption around 10:31pm local time (1531 GMT Thursday), which saw ash, sand and rocks thrown 1,500 metres (4,800 feet) into the air," government volcanologist Kristianto told AFP.
Grass and shrubs in an area stretching 500 metres around the volcano were on fire but there was no immediate danger to people living nearby, he said.
The volcano's status was raised to its highest red alert level after it spewed ash 500 metres into the air over the weekend, leading to a 3.5-kilometre (two-mile) evacuation zone being established in case of a bigger eruption.

Defending champion Saina Nehwal inched closer to a third successive Indonesian Open Super Series title after advancing to the finals with a hard-fought victory over Chinese Taipei's Shao Chieh Cheng here today.

The fourth-seeded Indian won 21-14 14-21 21-17 in a 45-minute battle against giant-killer Cheng, who had created quite a flutter by upstaging top seed Shixian Wang and seventh seed Xin Liu earlier in the tournament.

Saina had to dig deep in her armoury and rely on her power-packed smashes to outpace Cheng, who is known for her fast movement on court.

"I have seen her play in many tournaments. She is a very talented and hard working player. She is very dynamic and moves very fast on court. So it is important to have full force in the smashes or else she can retrieve from anywhere. It is a good win," Saina told PTI.
