Anonymous, the online hacktivist group, has released thousands of names, email addresses, home addresses and phone numbers believed to be from myBart.org, an independent site that uses BART’s (San Francisco’s Bay Area Rapid Transit) open data services.

The hacking is part of a carefully planned effort by Anonymous to bring BART to its knees in retaliation for its shutdown of cell phone service Thursday night at some of its stations to disrupt planned demonstrations over a police shooting.

A notice on BART’s website says the following:

BART’s online services including web, mobile web, email and SMS are used by nearly 2 million customers every month. We’re disappointed to announce that the BART website may be subject to an online attack today, Sunday August 14, between noon and 6 pm, because this action will directly affect those customers who depend upon our site, as well as the developers who use BART’s open data services to serve BART customers.

We’re doing what we can to defend against any attack on the BART website. BART’s website infrastructure is wholly separate from any computer network involved in the operation of BART service. In the event that bart.gov is not available or working as you’d expect, we encourage you to use the 511.org website for alternative transit information.

Anonymous has posted a list of all the names and addresses on a miscellaneous website (we won’t currently be linking to) and also included the following message (click for large version)

Inmate No. 21568-112 settles into a blue plastic chair inside the gymnasium-size visitor center at Big Spring Federal Correctional Institution, clad in a beige jumpsuit that matches the color of the dead grass surrounding the prison. Beyond the barbed wire lies the town of Big Spring, Texas (population: 25,000), a dusty, godforsaken former Air Force town pockmarked with shuttered businesses, fast-food joints, and four other detention and correctional facilities. With a Louisville Slugger in the trunk of his car and a computerized phone-hacking system in his Sunset Boulevard office, Pellicano dug up dirt on his clients’ enemies and helped make those problems go away—whether it was the embittered spouse of a mogul, an inconvenient gay lover, or a nosy journalist. That is, until he allegedly hired someone to intimidate the wrong nosy journalist—Anita Busch of the Los Angeles Times—and the FBI got involved, blowing the lid off the biggest wiretapping operation this side of Watergate.

PHONE HACKING SCANDAL: McCartney to approach police!!

Paul McCartney on his mobile phone in London. Former Beatle McCartney has told the Television Critics Association in the United States that he plans to contact police over allegations that his voicemails were intercepted - AP.

Beatles star Sir Paul McCartney believes he was also a victim of phone-hacking and intends to approach the police after returning to Britain after completing his ongoing tour of the United States.

Speaking to the media in the U.S., he said phone hacking was “a horrendous violation of privacy“.

His ex-wife Heather Mills had alleged that her phone was hacked to access Mr. McCartney’s messages while she was in India at the behest of the Trinity Mirror newspaper group.

Mr. McCartney told journalists in Ohio: “When I go back [to Britain] after this tour, I am going to talk to the police because apparently I have been hacked. I don’t know much about it because they won’t tell anyone except the person themselves. So I will be talking to them about that“.

He said: “I do think it’s horrendous violation of privacy. I do think it has been going on for a long time and I do think more people than we know knew about it. But I think I should just listen and hear what the facts are before I comment.”

The phone-hacking row has widened beyond Rupert Murdoch’s titles with Heather Mills’s revelation on a BBC programme on Wednesday night.

At the time her phone was hacked in 2001, Mr. McCartney was Ms. Mills’ boy-friend and the two married in 2002. They divorced in 2008.

Social network Facebook has hired a computer hacker who was recently sued by Sony for hacking the online game system PlayStation 3, The Sun reported.

Facebook, however, did not reveal what 21-year-old George Hotz will do for the firm.

Hotz - also known by the alias 'GeoHot' - gained notoriety in 2008 when he developed a software for unlocking the iPhone and allowing it to be used by other networks, the report said.
