Muzaffarnagar: A local court here on Thursday convicted four persons and sentenced them to seven years of imprisonment in connection with a dowry case.

Additional District Sessions Judge M K Shukla also imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 each on victim Shammu's husband Kayyum, mother-in-law Wakila, sister-in-law Firdos and another person Shehzad, after holding them guilty of abetting suicide by harassing the victim for dowry, prosecution sources said.

The Sessions Court suspended the conviction order of filmmaker Gaurang Doshi of 'Aankhen' and 'Deewaar' fame on Saturday and also granted him bail on a surety of Rs one lakh for subjecting his wife to cruelty for dowry.

Doshi had approached the Sessions court on Friday challenging the conviction order against him.

"We had applied for the bail as Doshi was not present before the magistrate's court, when a conviction order was passed against him," Doshi's lawyer Rishi Bhuta said.

New Delhi: Twenty eight-year-old Ruchi Bhuttan was found hanging from the ceiling fan in her flat in the posh DLF Phase 2 area of Gurgaon. But while it may seem like suicide, her family alleges that Ruchi was being harassed for dowry by her husband.

Ruchi's sister said, "She called at night saying they will kill her. Her dad-in-law says she was found hanging but we don't know if she was hanged or she did it herself!"
