Normal life in Kashmir Valley was disrupted on Wednesday due to a strike call given by hardline Hurriyat Conference Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani to protest against the custodial death of a youth in Sopore town.

Schools, shops, business establishments, private offices and banks remained closed in most pasts of the Valley due to the strike, officials said.

Sopore and other adjoining areas observed a complete shutdown as roads wore a deserted look in the apple town, 55 km from here.

Public transport services were also crippled across Kashmir. However, mini-buses could be seen plying on some routes in the outskirts of the summer capital, they said.

Attendance in government offices also remained thin due to non-availability of transport facilities, they added.

Mehbooba again prevented from visiting deceased youth's family

Sopore and Baramulla towns observed a spontaneous shutdown on Monday even as Chief Minister Omar Abdullah reiterated that exemplary punishment would be given to those who were responsible for the custodial death of Nazim Rashid (28).

Meanwhile, People's Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti was again prevented from going to Sopore and formally put under detention at her residence here. Independent MLA Sheikh Abdur Rashid was also detained when he tried to visit the victim's family.

SHOPS CLOSED

Reports from north Kashmir said shops and business establishments remained closed and traffic was off the road in Sopore and Baramulla. Work in government offices, banks and educational institutions was affected. Hundreds of police and CRPF personnel were deployed to prevent people from taking to the streets. Hardline Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Geelani has called a general strike in the Valley for Wednesday to protest against the “custodial killing.” The Chief Minister told journalists: “Action has to be taken against whosoever has committed the crime. We have initiated steps to know the circumstances that led to the death of the youth [on Saturday night].”

Nazim had been taken into custody in Sopore in connection with the death the recent killing of Mohammad Ashraf Dar.

The Chief Minister dismissed apprehensions that the guilty would be protected or the facts covered up. “A case has been registered against the persons involved under Section 302 (murder). We will ensure that punishment to the guilty is an example so that nobody dares commit such an act in future.”

POLICE EXCESSES: Sopore custodial death: Omar promises swift action!

Describing as an “inexcusable gross human rights violation” the custodial death of a youth in Sopore town, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday promised that swift and exemplary action would be taken in the case.

“The death of Anjum (Nazim) Rashid in police custody is a gross human rights violation and inexcusable. Things like this cannot be allowed to happen,” Mr. Abdullah wrote on micro-blogging site Twitter.

Nazim Rashid alias Anjum died in police custody in Sopore town of Baramulla district. He was picked up by police for questioning on Saturday.

“I expect the police to do nothing less than make an example of those responsible so that nothing like this even happens again,” the Chief Minister wrote.

Mr. Abdullah said there will be swift and exemplary action in the case. “Swift and exemplary action. No delays, no cover ups (and) no excuses. That is all I can promise and ensure,” he said.

He said he was aware that the action against the guilty persons was not enough. “It is not enough, of that too I am aware,” he added.

Official sources said as news of the death of the 28-year-old spread in his locality, the entire area observed a complete shutdown.

Additional security forces have been deployed in many parts of the town for maintaining law and order while a large contingent of police personnel have been put on stand-by in Police Control Room Srinagar to meet any eventuality, the sources said.
