In an early morning crackdown, anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare and his close aides were detained by police after the Gandhian vowed to go ahead with his fast for a strong Lokpal and defy prohibitory orders at the venue of his agitation.

High drama was witnessed in Mayur Vihar area in east Delhi when police detained the 74-year-old Gandhian at about 7:30 am from an apartment about three hours before he was to sit on his agitation. A large number of supporters opposed the action and shouted slogans supporting him.

Home Secretary R K Singh said Mr. Hazare was detained because he said he intended to defy prohibitory orders and sit on fast at JP Park in central Delhi. Delhi Police had denied permission for his fast after he refused to abide by all the 22 conditions set by them for the agitation.

Mr. Hazare’s close aides Kiran Bedi and Arvind Kejriwal were detained outside Rajghat. Lawyer Shanti Bhushan was also picked up.

“We will move the Supreme Court,” Prashant Bhushan, lawyer and close associate of Mr. Hazare, said.
Describing his detention by police as the beginning of the “second freedom struggle”, Mr. Hazare asked people to participate in a “Jail Bharo” agitation.

“My dear countrymen, second freedom struggle has begun and now I have also been arrested. But will this movement be stopped by my arrest. No not at all. Don’t let it happen,” Mr. Hazare said in a pre-recorded message.

Anna fasts in police detention

Anna Hazare today launched a fast in police custody soon after he was detained for sticking to his plan to defy prohibitory orders and stage a protest against corruption here.

"Not surprised"

Senior BJP leader L K Advani said he was not surprised at the detention of Hazare and charged the government with looking for scapegoats and stopping peaceful protests instead of fighting corruption.

01) I personally do not subscribe to all clauses of 'Jan Lok Pal' bill as propounded and being propagated as the 'Omnibus Solution' for all the Corruption of our Soceity;

02)  A Single 'Lok Pal' at the National level, with 'Lok Ayukthas' at each State level to take care of corruption right from the PM to the Village Mukhia and from the Top Cabinet Secretaries to the Village Secretaries would be a truly behemoth and unmanageable entity that would serve 'zero purpose'  to the Society;

03)  And even bringing Judiciary under the ambit of Lok Pal is untenable, as the existing complaint, investigation & prosecution mechanism as provided in our Constitution and supporting laws have been working fine, since long;

04) I, firmly, believe, that the 'Lok Pal' as originally envisaged some five decades ago to be the 'Ombudsman' over the office holders of all the top political functionaries and higher bureaucracy should be brought in place at the National Level that should include PM, all Union Ministers, MPs, and all top Central Government Functionaries, without any exception, as now being sought by the UPA Government;

05) This 'Lok Pal' again cannot be allowed to be the Investigator, Prosecutor and the Judge!

06) 'Lok Pal' should review all complaints and initiate a thorough investigation, where it finds 'prima facie' evidence to do so and direct the prosecuting agencies to complete the process of prosecution;

07) Now, coming to the present Anna Hazere's Fast and Team-Anna's Agitation, I, still, believe that it is their constitutional right to protest against anything they believe to be unfair or unconstitutional;

08) Preventing them from doing so is not only Unconstitutional but also betrayal of the present day Administration's Despotic acts of outright suppression;

09) Every recent poll confirmed that overwhelming majority of Indians want the UPA Government to include PM, all the Union Ministers, MPs, and all top Central Government Functionaries, without any exception;

10) Dr. Manmohan Singh's Government had better tune in their antennae towards the pulse of the people rather than living in their own paradise of foolish dillusions that whatever they believe they can impose and lecture, at the ramparts of the Red Fort, on being committed to eradicating the corruption, while all the while indulging in, overseeing, aiding, abetting, shielding and denying the people of their right to know of the corrupt and the names of the illegal account holders abroad!
