The former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister said in a statement, "Had Rajiv Gandhi been alive today, that noble man would have definitely come forward to save the lives (of the convicts)."

DMK chief M. Karunanidhi on Monday “fervently” asked for a cancellation of the death sentence of three persons involved in Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination, saying this would make Tamils happy.

In a statement here, the party patriarch said “they have spent nearly 20 years in prison which is more than life imprisonment, the capital punishment now proposed... should be cancelled. If this is done, the entire Tamil race will extol such humanitarian action and they will be happy.” “I fervently appeal to the central and state governments to save the lives of the three youths from the clutches of death, taking this not as an epistle, but as a mercy petition.”

Rest at,

  1. 01) If there was any grain of truth that the convicted were falsely implicated, the series of Courts, upto the Supreme Court of India wouldn't have allowed the Death Sentence, in the first place.

    02) By insisting the above, the Tamil Leaders have been playing to the gallery, which majority have rejected them in the recent elections.

    03) Now, anyway it has become out of anybody's hands to save the convicted, but if they are let free as the Tamilnadu Leaders suggest, the rest of Indian citizens would be displeased.
