Syrian security forces have killed seven protesters in the Syrian capital Damascus, Idlib province and Deraa, opening fire with live ammunition as hundreds of thousands of demonstrators took to the streets across the country, activists said.
The protests stretched from the centre of Damascus, the capital, to the southern and northern ends of the country on what activists have dubbed "Friday of freedom for prisoners" - demanding the release of over 12,000 detained since the uprising erupted in March.
Rami Abdel Rahman of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said about 350,000 people turned out in the eastern city of Deir Ezzor, while 150,000 others in Hama protested against President Bashar al-Assad.
At least two were killed by security forces in of Deraa, an activist speaking on the condition of anonymity has told the Associated Press news agency.
"All hell broke loose, the firing was intense,'' the activist said.
Security forces also fired live rounds on Friday to disperse thousands of protesters calling for more freedoms in the centre of the capital Damascus, a witness said. But there were no immediate reports of casualties.
