Fight for fertility

Infertility is no longer just a woman’s issue. Studies have shown that the mean sperm count in the male population has declined over the last 50 years by up to 50 per cent — making infertility very much a male issue too! Biological and environmental factors have always been recognised as major aspects that affect reproductive health but lately, nutrition has come into play as an influential component.
In India male infertility has increased at an alarming rate. Nearly 7.5 to 10 per cent of all men in the reproductive age group are infertile. Among the large number of infertile couples in the country, up to 50 per cent of cases hold the husband accountable for the infertility. There are a number of factors that cause this condition. Sexual dysfunctions such as irregular sperm production and hampered sperm delivery are known to largely contribute to this disorder. The low count (oligospermia), absent sperms (azoospermia) and poorly mobile sperms (asthenospermia) are the common sperm defects. Conditions like varicocoela (dilated veins), infections and anti-sperm proteins can adversely affect fertility.
Hormone abnormality however, contributes to infertility only in a small number of people. Medical conditions such as obesity and lifestyle conditions such as diet imbalance, addiction to smoking or alcohol, a desk-bound existence and mental and emotional stress are also some contributory factors. These along with environmental issues also contribute to the ill health of the male reproductive system. And what is also causing the problem is the emerging trend of late marriage and deferred childbirth.
