The Supreme Court appointed Central Empowerment Committee monitoring encroachment of forests and mining operations in several states, in a report submitted to the apex court, has directed stopping of mining operations in at least two dozen mines in Karnatakaa’s Bellary region.
Though the report has been submitted by the CEC in sealed cover to the top court, the sources said of the mines surveyed so far, the panel had recommended stalling of the mining operation at least in 24 mines, finding them violating the rules and apex court guidelines. The CEC submitted the report after, a forest bench, headed by Chief Justice S.H. Kapadia, had ordered fresh survey of 99 mining leases, as four interim reports by the CEC had indicated gross violation of the lease contracts with the state government.
