Alert staff and locals saved the lives of scores of passengers on Saturday as cracks were detected on the railway track at two separate places in the Eastern Railway zone.
A crack was detected by the motorman of the (Up) Barrackpore local between the Dum Dum Junction and Belghoria stations in the Sealdah division at around 7.15 a.m. when the train was crossing a point.
A senior Eastern Railway official said the motorman alerted the Station Master of the Dum Dum Junction immediately and train movement was suspended on the track.
“The crack was finally repaired at 8.20 a.m. and services resumed on the particular track. Movement of trains, however, was not hampered due to the incident since the other three lines were kept operational,” the official said.
In another incident, a crack was detected by villagers between the Adi Saptagram and Magra stations in the Bandel-Bardhaman section of Howrah division at around 9.03 a.m.
