SK Magunni lives in Yatakallu Village in Chetturu Mandal of Anantapur district. Her husband used to work as an electrician but had stopped working due to ill health. They own three acres of land, but being totally dependent on rainwater, they have no yield from this land.  They have six daughters who work as labourers, peeling tamarind seeds, but even with their combined income they cannot make ends meet.  In spite of these difficult circumstances she got two daughters married.

The family was in dire straits when the APRLP watershed development programme was launched in the village. This brought about gradual changes in the economic condition of Magunni’s family. Magunni joined a self-help group along with other women. When the village organisation was formed a livelihood fund was sanctioned to the village organisation. Magunni was able to take a loan of Rs.10, 000 to establish a flour mill. She bought the flour mill for Rs.12, 000.  The village already had a flour mill, but she knew that there was scope for another because there were 600 families in the village. All the members of the self-help group have become Magunni’s loyal customers. Thus her business has prospered and she earns well. She charges Rs.2 to grind one kilogram of wheat and thus she earns Rs.70-100 a day and Rs.300 on the festival days. The fl our mill earns between Rs.3, 000 - 4,000 per month. After spending Rs.1, 500 on paying electricity bills and meeting all the other expenses she saves Rs.2, 000 per month.

All the family members still continue to work as daily wage labourers. With the additional income of Rs.2, 000 per month, she has been able to marry off her other two daughters as well. Magunni’s story is a good example of how the enterprise promotion scheme has improved the quality of life of the villagers.
