Rural Livelihoods and Sustainable Living: Case-22: NO MORE MIGRATION FOR GORI BI’S FAMILY!

Have you read, “Mayhem of the Miserables!” available @ http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/52075

MD Gori Bi is 55 years old. She lives with her husband Khasim, son and daughter-in-law in Gopanapalli village in Devarakadra Mandal of Mahaboobnagar district. They own 1.5 acres of dryland, on which they cultivated red gram and castor which earned them around Rs.5, 000 per year. When there was no work for them in their field Khasim and his son used to work in an oil mill in Hyderabad. Together they earned nearly Rs.5, 000 per month, but no matter how careful they were with their money they could not save more than Rs.1, 000 every month. After some time when Khasim fell ill he stopped going to Hyderabad. Their son became a labourer.

When the Andhra Pradesh Rural Livelihoods project was introduced to their village Gori Bee joined the Vijayalaxmi self-help group, as did many others. Taking note of her situation, the village organisation offered her a loan from the livelihood fund to begin some business. Gori Bee decided to start a hotel, for which she got a loan of Rs.5, 000 from the village organisation.  Now the whole family takes part in running the hotel. Presently their monthly income is Rs.6, 000 and they do not need to migrate or go out to make a living.
