Mouth ulcers are extremely painful but can be treated easily, unless the underlying cause is a disease.
Mouth ulcers, though very common, are painful, annoying and sometimes embarrassing. These are red breaks in the lining of the mouth. The pain is caused when nerves just below the surface of the mouth's lining are exposed. They often seem to start by themselves as a small bubble or blister, which then becomes an open and ulcerated pit or crevasse. Alternatively they can be started by trauma to the mouth's lining (e.g. by accidentally biting oneself).

Severe ulcers cause sufferers to actively avoid eating, drinking, talking. Speech is painful resulting in a loss of clarity or enunciation. Sufferers are worn down by pain and become fatigued and depressed. Severe mouth ulcers can lead to high fever.

According to the American Dental Association, ulcers are linked to the auto-immune system and an allergic reaction, in that certain triggers (which may differ from person to person) cause the mucosal lining to become compromised so that it is attacked by one's own saliva, or unfriendly bacteria within it.
