Book knowledge will get you nowhere

Recently when recruiters from Microsoft visited a top city college, they were taken aback when the college topper was asked who the President of India was. She paused and said “Manmohan Singh”. The incident is not a one-off one and these days many students, despite scoring good marks, lack general awareness and social skills.
A two-minute chat with this year’s contestants of Miss AP was shocking too. When asked what their future plans were, one of them said, “Means... I don’t know... Tollywood only I want to be in. Ante, now I want to win contest.” In spite of most of them making waves on popular TV channels (as anchors), it is surprising that these girls lacked basic communication skills. They weren’t comfortable conversing in Telugu as well.
When we spoke to an IIT topper recently he responded in monosyllables. “I did not study anything. I was living in boarding school, so, in class only we did revision.” Dr B.V. Pattabhiram, a reputed children’s counsellor and soft skills trainer, says, “In a seminar at an engineering college, one out of 10 students could not answer the difference between a demand draft and a cheque. This is the case because everything from the paperwork to the payment of fees is done by the parents. How will kids learn if every single thing is spoon fed?” Though India accounts for more than one-third of the world’s engineering graduates every year and is a country dominated by the youth, most of them lack the basic knowledge and communication skills needed to be employable.
General Awareness is the key to success in Society!
