Facing flak from civil society for not doing enough to deal with the menace of black money, the government on Wednesday announced the setting up of another panel to suggest ways to trace tax defaulters, reveal their identity to the public and recover taxes.
The committee, set up by Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) in the Finance Ministry, will also look into the possibility of putting the list of “chronic defaulters” in public domain.
The Committee, headed by Anita Kapur, Director General of Income Tax (Admn), will suggest ways to recover tax demand from assessees who are not traceable.
The sincerity of a Government in tackling a burning issues like black money is not gauged by the number of committees it sets up nor the number of Acts. it passes in the Parliament but the actual quantum of black money, stashed abroad, it brings back to India and ferret out within India.
There are already enough solutions, already on the pubic domain, to curb this gangrene of our Society and what we need is not some more committees wasting our taxes but the political will on the part of our ruling class.
