KABUL — President Hamid Karzai has instructed his defense minister to stop all night raids by NATO troops in Afghanistan, the latest escalation of his long-running conflict with the coalition over civilian casualties.
Karzai’s decision, announced Saturday in a statement from his office, did not elaborate on how he intended to accomplish this goal. While U.S. soldiers strive to partner closely with their Afghan counterparts, they also conduct their own missions, in coordination with Afghans, across the country on a daily basis.
The statement came on another violent day in Afghanistan. A suicide bomber blew himself up in the governor’s compound in the northern province of Takhar, killing the top police official in northern Afghanistan, Gen. Daud Daud, and at least 10 other people, according to Afghan officials. The police chief of Takhar, Shah Jan Noori, was also killed, and the provincial governor, Abdul Jabar Taqwa, was wounded, said Hassan Baseej, chief of the provincial public health office.
NATO Forces aren't that careful in avoiding civilian casualties, there, as elsewhere!
