Our Welfare State!

On 19th. last Evening I was fortunate enough to attend Dr. Karan Grover's Presentation on 'The Evolution of Green Space in Nature to Landscape" as part of the two-day workshop on 'Green Landscape Summit 2011: 18 March 2011: CII - Godrej GBC, Hyderabad.  After having been introduced by Dr. P.C. Jain the Chair of Indian Green Building Council, who himself has been a renown Indian Green Building Designer, the famous Green Designer has jumped into his presentation, taking the audience from the days when we were part of our Nature to this day when we went far away from it visiting in only during our vacations.  Needless to say it was a profound message to all of us return to our roots, that is to our Mother Nature.

During the course as he was discussing the fast to be extinct species among others the several species of insects, mammals, et al and almost got emotional to suggest that all those poached forests for the animal skins, etc. to be shot, without any trial.  Well this is India where despite overwhelming evidence all sorts of looters of national wealth do get away. And we call ourselves a democracy and tend to wash off our conciousness with such hypocrisy.

If we were really a democracy, we should have a powerful mechanism to right the wrong or stop calling ourselves as a republic or democracy, since we neither are we sovereign of our own weaknesses to be free to call ourselves a republic nor are we truly practice a democracy which also assures justice to all.

Further, if were a true welfare state, by now we would have not only laws in place but strict implementation as well, for providing basic needs to all the citizens, not just to the wealthy or middle class.

To conclude the laws should address our own basic greed, for instance a law against supplying of contaminated water or food, an accommodation which top floor doesn't have a proper insulation or a building without ample ventilation or day light to be banned from building or letting out.
