India's Nuclear Time-bomb: PM reviews safety of N-plants, directs upgradation!

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday directed upgradation of safety measures at the country's nuclear facilities to match the global standards as he reviewed the disaster preparedness in the wake of recent radiation scare in Japan.

At a special meeting here, he asked the authorities concerned to look 'beyond design basis accident' while putting in place the safety measures at the nuclear installations.

Singh took stock of the safety measures being undertaken by Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) and Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL). 

Like any other Developed Economy, India's power augmentation requirement is solely because of power wastages, right from supply side, transmission & distribution side and consumption side.

If we bring down that wastage to realistic levels, actually, we need not go for any expansion in our power sector, for another 30 years.

While Nuclear power is clean the dangerous that go with it is daunting that we would rather go for the saving rout and int the meanwhile find a better alternative to the conventional fuel based power.

Within a week of a train-bus collision in Uttar Pradesh that left 33 dead, another major railway accident has left the nation shocked. While the toll of Sunday’s calamitous derailment of the Howrah-New Delhi Kalka Mail is yet to be known as many bodies remained tangled inside the coaches and the army had been called for rescue and relief operation, at least 20 bodies had been extricated and the number is poised to rise as rescue operations are under way.

True, every new Railway Minister, in budget after budget, ear-mark major portion of the massive Railway budget, to introduce newer lines and newer trains to his / her home state and rarely invest in the most critical aspect of 'Safety'!

The head of the U.N. nuclear agency urged a worldwide rethink of safety measures to prevent new nuclear disasters, declaring on Monday that in the wake of the Fukushima catastrophe “business as usual is not an option.”

But Yuiya Amano, chief of the International Atomic Energy Agency, also acknowledged that improvements are only effective if countries apply them, in opening comments to the IAEA’s conference on nuclear safety.

While some countries at the 150-member IAEA’s meeting want any new safety regime to be mandatory, most prefer them to be voluntary. If the IAEA cannot enforce safety standards, those rules will be only as good as they are enforced by IAEA nations.

Europeans are already exiting this arena, while they continue to push Nuclear Technology & Raw Materials to the developing world.

Its high time the we too relook into the whole energy through Nuclear, before we make long term investments into it!

'The Hindu': Jaitapur plant, a ‘dangerous version of Dhabol'

The All India Power Engineers' Federation (AIPEF) and the National Confederation of Officers' Associations of Central Public Sector Undertakings (NCOA) have come out strongly against the proposed Jaitapur nuclear power plant.

Terming it a “dangerous nuclear version of the Enron's Dhabol fiasco,” they said the Centre agreed to the French reactor even without design and safety features being presented to and approved by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB).
