Probe ordered into appointment of Achuthanandan's son.

Kerala Speaker G. Karthikeyan on Wednesday ordered an assembly committee to probe whether Leader of Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan's son was appointed director of an IT educational institute during the Marxist leader's tenure as the chief minister.

Achuthanandan on Wednesday morning denied that his son V.A. Arunkumar was appointed the director of the ICT Academy during his tenure as the state chief minister, as alleged by Congress legislator P.C. Vishnunath.

"If Vishnunath still stands by his statement, then this can be inquired into by an assembly committee or he should withdraw his allegation and apologise," Achuthanandan said on the floor of the assembly.

With Vishnunath sticking to his contention, the speaker ruled that an assembly committee will probe the issue.

Former CBDT chairman Sudhir Chandra has been questioned by the Intelligence Bureau over his role in hiring private detectives in sweeping clear the rooms of Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and his staff after detection of “plated adhesives” in 16 key locations.

During the questioning on Thursday, IB officials asked Mr. Chandra, who was then Member (Investigations) in the CBDT, why private detectives were called before informing the IB to inspect the plated “bugs” in the Ministry of Finance, official sources said.

When contacted, Mr. Chandra denied that he has been quizzed by anyone, saying at the time of reported “bugging” he was not the chairman of CBDT and he had no role in hiring private detectives.

An inquiry is also on to find out the name of the private detective agency which carried out the debugging exercise in the Ministry of Finance.

“It is not a formal inquiry but discreetly the investigators are trying to find out the name and the findings of that agency,” the sources said.

The All India Power Engineers' Federation (AIPEF) and the National Confederation of Officers' Associations of Central Public Sector Undertakings (NCOA) have come out strongly against the proposed Jaitapur nuclear power plant.

Terming it a “dangerous nuclear version of the Enron's Dhabol fiasco,” they said the Centre agreed to the French reactor even without design and safety features being presented to and approved by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB).
