SUBJECT: AUTHOR TASLIMA NASREEN: PAWN IN POLITICAL WEB

REF: A. KOLKATA 359 / B. KOLKATA 356

1. (SBU) Summary: Claiming that the Communist Party of India - Marxist (CPM) pushed her to leave Kolkata (ref A), controversial Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen finally settled in a "safe place" in Delhi under the security of the Indian central government. Her flight from Kolkata sparked a political firestorm, with the BJP offering her sanctuary and the CPM, ironically, being seen as anti-secular. After a pounding in the media and the opposition for initially looking the other way during Nasreen's flight, the UPA finally agreed on November 28 to provide her safe shelter in India provided she not engage in political activities. Congress and the CPM continued to snipe at each other while searching for a solution that does not offend their all-important Muslim vote bank. The CPM is being accused by some of manufacturing the controversy in order to drive Nandigram out of the front pages. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has claimed the secular high ground calling for Nasreen to receive a permanent visa. Adding a farcical tinge to the controversy, noted Muslim-bashing Gujarat BJP Chief Minister Narendra Modi has even jumped on the bandwagon, offering Nasreen protection in his state.

2. (SBU) While on the defensive, the CPM believes this is an easier issue to handle in Parliament than Nandigram, and is probably quietly relieved that her case has pushed the Nandigram massacres from the front page. The Congress wants to push the issue under the rug. The BJP holds the upper hand and will milk the controversy dry. As for the author, she has said Kolkata is her home and she would prefer to live there, but the CPM, it seems, despite its high-minded rhetoric about looking after the little guy, has no space in that teeming city for a female author fleeing an unjust fatwa and threats to her life in Bangladesh. In the end, this episode further exposes the CPM for the hypocritical authoritarians that they really are. End Summary

Intolerance Rears its Ugly Head

3. (U) The storm surrounding controversial Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen began on November 21, a few days after the Nandigram killings (ref B). Nasreen and Nandigram became linked after All India Minorities Forum president Idris Ali led a protest against CPM's actions in Nandigram and demanded Nasreen's Indian visa be revoked for what he claimed were her anti-Islamic writings. Protesters fought a pitched battle with Kolkata police causing numerous injuries but no fatalities. To quell the violence, the CPM government of West Bengal (GOWB) called for Nasreen to "leave the state." (Note: Nasreen, who travels on a Swedish passport, faces death threats from fundamentalists in Bangladesh, her country of birth, for her writings. Her Indian visa expires February 17, 2008).

Celebrations to welcome Chiranjeevi into Congress!

Hyderabad: It was supposed to be a momentous day for the ruling Congress in Andhra Pradesh with formalities related to the merger of Praja Rajyam Party getting completed on Monday.
There was a grand celebration at the APCC headquarters 'Gandhi Bhavan' to commemorate the occasion with Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, PCC president Botsa Satyanarayana and a host of party leaders in attendance to welcome the 'star of the day' K Chiranjeevi and his group of MLAs into their fold.

But, along with the jubilation there was also some desolation in the Congress camp as at least two dozen of its MLAs formally snapped their ties with the party besides quitting their Assembly membership.

The Congress Legislature Party's balance sheet thus read '17 in' and '24 out' on Monday though it doesn't really pose any threat to the Kiran Kumar Reddy government as it still has 152 MLAs on its side and can also count on seven of the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen.

The government will not fall by any means, even if the resignations of all the 26 MLAs are accepted.

"So, even if the 26 resignations are accepted, it will only be an advantage for the government as it will have a larger strength than required," a legal expert analysed.

The same confidence was reflected in Congress leaders' assertion at the Gandhi Bhavan function that none could pull down the party government.

On their part, the Jagan loyalists too maintained that they had no intention to dislodge the Kiran Kumar Reddy government and their resignations were only to protest against tarnishing of late Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy's name in the ongoing CBI case against the Kadapa MP.

Assembly Speaker Nadendla Manohar, who summarily rejected the resignations of 101 MLAs from Telangana last month on the ground that they were submitted in a fit of emotion, is unlikely to take a decision soon on the Jagan-loyal MLAs' resignations.

PTI / The Hindu / NEW DELHI, August 20, 2011.

Supporters gather in solidarity with social activist Anna Hazare during his fast in New Delhi on Saturday.
Supporters gather in solidarity with social activist Anna Hazare during his fast in New Delhi on Saturday.

Social activist Anna Hazare on Saturday slammed the Congress for alleging that his agitation was backed by the BJP and the RSS. “People who are saying such things should be sent to mental hospital. They have linked us to the United States and now they may link our agitation to Pakistan also,” the Gandhian said.
The Gandhian's comments came on Day 5 of his fast even as the government and his team spoke of the need for a dialogue on the Lokpal issue.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh affirmed that there was “a lot of scope for give and take” and that the government was open to “discussion and dialogue“.
Hours later Team Anna member Arvind Kejriwal said that they were ready for talks and asked “whom should we meet, where should we meet and when should we meet.”
At the Ramlila Maidan where Mr. Hazare is fasting, his associates Mr. Kejriwal, Prashant Bhushan and Kiran Bedi spoke some tough words like “we cannot trust this government”, but at the same time maintained that the government should come forward and start discussions.
There were no signs as to which side would take the initiative to break the deadlock, but it was obvious that the move would have to come soon since Mr. Hazare would enter sixth day of his fast on Sunday. As of now, his vital health parameters were “stable.”
Calling for a broad national consensus on Lokpal, the Prime Minister expressed the hope that the government can enlist the cooperation of “all thinking segments of Indian public opinion to ensure that the end-product is a strong and effective Lokpal which all sections of our community want“.
”...We are open to discussion and dialogue. We like a broad national consensus to emerge. We are all in favour of a Lokpal which is strong and which is effective,” he said.
Asked about Mr. Hazare’s demand that the Jan Lokpal should be passed by Parliament by August 30, Dr. Singh said “well, clearly, I think there are difficulties. It is a logic of the legislative process.”

ANTI CORRUPTION MOVEMENT: Anna dares Cong to prove corruption allegations!

Anna dares Cong to prove corruption allegations

New Delhi: The war of words between team Anna and the government reached a new low on Sunday with the Congress calling him “corrupt” and Hazare openly daring the Congress to prove the allegations labelled against him. Anna Hazare vowed to continue his fast from August 16 till the charges are proved wrong, even if civil society's version of Lokpal bill is cleared in the Parliament.

In its sharpest attack ever against team Anna, Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari termed the Anna Hazare-led civil society “A-Company”. Alleging that Anna was involved in corruption himself, he said, Justice PB Sawant Commission had ripped apart the "moral core" of Hazare as it "found him steeped in corruption from head to toe" and asked him to clarify its "serious findings" against him and his trusts before launching the agitation.

It should be noted that the Maharashtra state government had instituted a Commission of Inquiry under Justice Sawant in September 2003 to inquire into the corruption charges levelled by Hazare in 2003 against four ministers in the then Maharashtra government and also allegations of irregularities against Trusts run by him.

The Commission submitted its report on February 22, 2005 in which it criticised Hind Swaraj Trust for spending Rs 2.20 lakhs of its funds on the birthday celebrations of Hazare finding it to be a "corrupt" practice. It also indicted Sant Yadavbaba Shikshan Prasarak Mandal, a trust with which Hazare is associated with since its inception in 1980 for committing "illegalities" in its audits.

Responding to the allegations of the Congress party which had cited the report of Sawant Committee, Anna said, “All charges against me are baseless. If they can, let them prove it.”

“The government has already targeted other civil society members of the drafting committee on Lokpal Bill. I was the only one left. But, finally they have not spared me also”, he said.

"I am challenging the government to lodge an FIR against me and conduct an inquiry. I am not afraid of any inquiry", he said.

01)  The Gentlemen who are now accusing of Anna of corruption has kept quite since 2005 when the Report was submitted!

02) If there was any prima facie evidence, long back they would have prosecuted Him!!

03) Even now they can file an FIR and prosecute Anna Hazare and that is not going to diminish the support he would get for his present campaign!!!

CONGRESS SMEAR CAMPAIGN: Sawant Commission didn't term Anna corrupt - Lawyer!

ibnlive.in.com / Press Trust Of India / Posted on Aug 14, 2011 at 11:33pm IST.

Pune: Amidst Congress accusing social activist Anna Hazare of corruption citing Justice PB Sawant Commission report, his lawyer said the Commission did not hold the Gandhian guilty of any wrongdoings.

Justice PB Sawant who had investigated the complaints against Hazare's Hind Swaraj Trust had remarked about "irregularities" in submission of accounts and not held him guilty of any "corrupt" practices, Hazare's lawyer Milind Pawar said in a statement.

Sawant, whose probe found that an amount of Rs 2.2 lakh was diverted from Hazare's trust for his birthday celebrations, has said this action amounted to "corruption".

Pawar said when a US-based NGO Care International announced an award for Hazare, it was decided to felicitate him on June 16, 1998, coinciding with his 61st birthday.

"Abhay Phirodia, a Pune-based industrialist took the initiative to organise the function and remitted an amount of Rs 2,48,950 to the trust by cheque soon after the function for which the trust had spent Rs 2.18 lakh," he said.

Pawar said after the report of Justice Sawant was released in 2003, a complaint was filed with Pune police on December 9, 2005.

Police, in their report submitted to the court, stated there was no evidence of corruption on part of Hazare, the lawyer claimed.

In a World where there are always people who attribute motives to those who expose corruption, we shouldn't be surprised that maligning campaigners do not care for any proof or evidence to throw mud on almost anyone!

LOK PAL BILL: Congress, Govt hit out at 'corrupt' Anna!

Congress, Govt hit out at `corrupt` Anna

Zeenews Bureau

New Delhi: The UPA government and Congress on Sunday launched a two-pronged attack against Team Anna, calling Anna Hazare corrupt and accusing him of misleading the people of India.

Addressing a press conference here, Union ministers Kapil Sibal and Ambika Soni lashed out at Anna Hazare for attacking Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in a letter.

Soni said, “In the 64 years since independence no one has spoken like this against any prime minister, not even the opposition”.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anna is corrupt: Congress

Earlier, addressing a separate press conference in the national capital Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari called Anna Hazare corrupt and non-transparent.

Tewari said Anna Hazare is himself involved in corruption, adding people linked to the activist are facing serious charges of corruption including extortion, land grabbing and black mailing.

In its sharpest attack ever against Team Anna, the Congress spokesperson called the civil society group “A-Company”.

Tewari said Hazare has crossed all the limits of mannerism and has violated basic courtesy.

Going into specifics, Tewari said four organisations linked to Anna Hazare have been probed for corruption.

Reiterating his earlier remarks, Tewari said Justice PB Sawant Committee had found Anna guilty of involvement in a graft case.

It should be noted that the Maharashtra state government had instituted a Commission of Inquiry under Justice Sawant in September 2003 to inquire into the allegations of corruption and maladministration against several people, including Anna Hazare.

01)  Its shocking to note that only now Manish Tiwari is talking of  corruption of Anna Hazare, that has been in the public domain since 2005!

02) Why the Congress Government has't so far initiated prosecution against Anna??

03) I am giving below the findings of the said Commission, for the readers to read and decide for themselves on the issue:-

"Three trusts headed by Anna Hazare were also indicted in the P. B. Sawant commission report. Indian Rupee symbol.svg220,000 (US$4,910) spent by the Hind Swaraj Trust for Anna Hazare's birthday celebrations was concluded by the commission as illegal and amounting to a corrupt practice,[47][48]though Abhay Firodia, an industrialist subsequently donated Indian Rupee symbol.svg248,000 (US$5,530) to the trust for that purpose.[49] The setting apart of 11 acres of its land by the trust in favour of the Zilla Parishad without obtaining permission from the charity commissioner was concluded as a case of maladministration. The commission also concluded that the maintenance of accounts of the Bhrashtachar Virodhi Janandolan Trustafter 10 November 2001 had not been according to the rules and Indian Rupee symbol.svg46,374 (US$1,030) spent by the Sant Yadavbaba Shikshan Prasarak Mandal Trust for renovating a temple was in contravention to its object of imparting secular education.[47][48]"

Full report of the Commission is at, http://judgesplot4plot.com/Plot4Plot/008_09.htm

04) When we supported Ramdev, with all his skeletons in the name of his numerous trusts and companies why can't we support Anna Hazare despite his own shortcomings - as he is presently fighting for welfare of all of us and of our future generations?

05) Finally, the Congress spokespersons had better realise that by throwing mud on someone who is fighting for the good of all, they own credibility is not going to enhance!!!

KERALA POLITICS: Oommen Chandy has bettered his clout in Congress!

For LEED Consultancy / IGBC Certifications, Green Building Design, Green Homes, Green Factory Buildings, Green SEZs, Green Townships & Energy Audits - www.greentekindika.com

Prabhat Nair, Express News Service / Last Updated : 10 Aug 2011 07:59:31 AM IST.

KOCHI:  The acceptance of Oommen Chandy as the face of the government and the United Democratic Front’s face-saving mechanism of not sending negative signals to the people have induced the leaders of the UDF to rally behind Chief Minister Ommen Chandy.

Chandy has been well-received as the face of the government both within the party and the UDF.

With Chandy enjoying the support of the high command, the state leadership has found it hard to call for an immediate change of leadership in the wake of the Palmolein case.

Moreover, after becoming the Chief Minister, Chandy has improved his clout in the Congress, which no other top leader enjoys.

He has also become the final word in the state Congress party.

Chandy’s seniority, administrative experience and skills to manage the coalition have given him an edge over other leaders in running the government. Obviously, these skills have made Chandy the unanimous choice of the Congress as well as the UDF.

Chandy also enjoys the support of the All-India Congress Committee president Sonia Gandhi and Defence Minister A K Antony. It has been learned that Antony had asked Chandy not to resign and to first think about the party and the UDF.

Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Ramesh Chennithala, who had been in the forefront for the Chief Minister’s post during the election campaign, had made it clear that there was no need for Chandy to quit as he had not been charged with any offence.

He had said on Monday that no evidence was found against Chandy and the order for re-probe had been issued without any evidence. The UDF constituents, including the Indian Union Muslim League and the Kerala Congress (M), have also been left with no choice but to support Chandy as they think he is the only person who could lead the coalition government to its full term. They do not want to create ripples in the coalition or in the government by just

Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy during a press conference - PTI.

Suspected Congress workers entered the compound of Janata Party chief Subramanian Swamy's house in south Delhi on Sunday and ransacked his garden to protest a controversial article he wrote recently, police said.

The incident took place around 5.30p.m., when the police received a call about protests at Swamy's house in East Nizamuddin.

Swamy, meanwhile, posted on microblogging site Twitter: "Rowdy Congress persons break open into my Nizamuddin compound (and) destruct my garden. Police have arrived. Please inform police (sic)."

In another tweet, Swamy said: "A plain clothes police officer was witness and has given evidence for FIR."

A police officer said that a few Congress workers shouted slogans and entered the garden. "They ransacked the garden and left in fifteen minutes."

Dr. Subramanian Swamy with his stature should never have stooped to the level of cheap communal passion instigation through his controversial article;

Similarly, Congress workers or whoever it was not right in indulging in physical violence and destruction of properties;

Both should be prosecuted for their crimes under relevant legal provisions!!!
